Doing a lot of work on the new house and doing in-wall surround sound and while I'm at it going to probably jump to a flat screen mounted on the wall.....Was going to hold off but with doing the in-wall speakers I need to decided on the placement of the center channel (above with tv on stand or below wth wall mounted tv)......I'm the type that like to do everything all in one shot.

Rather large room 18'x24' so looking at the 65" as being the size to go with. I have a 60" Sony projection TV in there currently and looks to be about the right size for the room but a little bit of an upgrade is size is always a must. Plasma is an option as windows are on the East wall and tv is on West wall so isn't very bright during times that we want to watch TV. Open to about all options...budget is capped at $2500...ready GO.
 


Gotta go plasma - I got a 65" Panasonic Smart Viera, its top shelf & much better for sports imo (get a good refresh rate)
 
the cost difference between 60" and 65" is going to be hilarious to you. just saying.

and for you to have a budget of $2500...what're you buying, a movie theater? i got my 60" plasma for my basement for like $798 shipped on amazon...

there's three kinds of TV's:

LED - basically an upgrade of an LCD, uses less power and bulbs last longer
LCD - can't get super good resolution (240Hz) max, can get the 1080p mumbo jumbo, does well with glare
plasma - immediate 600Hz screen resolution, can get 1080p, uses more power and gets kinda hot, doesn't do well with glare

i have an LCD in my living room upstairs. it gets more use than the other TV in the house and it is in a more well lit room. it's a decent one i bought a bunch of years back (240Hz, 1080p, 47" [i have a smaller living room, big TV would look dumb]).

i have a plasma in the basement. the picture quality and resolution is far superior to the LCD i have upstairs. it's way better for watching sports and playing video games, but it's in the basement so there are very few hours of the day that the sun shines in the windows and puts a glare on it. it uses more power and gets kinda hot, but i don't use it nearly as often as the upstairs TV so i wasn't worried about it. plasmas have come a long way and they don't use as much power as people think. they also don't do the screen ghosting anymore because they automatically shift pixels by themselves so even if a screen is paused for a million years it won't ghost and burn into the screen. the real benefit to a plasma: they're cheap.


if you have the right lighting in the room and don't mind a "normal" power usage for a TV: plasma for sure.

hint: find a TV that has all of the necessary amount of HDMI ports that you need so you don't have to get a gay splitter for like $80.
 
Plasma refresh rates are like 600hz, they don't operate like LCD/LED's.
I just helped my friend pick out a 64 inch samsung plasma... he paid $999.
IMO, scrap all the smart TV features and get the middle of the road choice. Picture quality is nearly (if not identically) as good and you'll pay about 40% as much.

There will be no donations and I was just setting an absolut cap for the people that were going to throw out the $5000 tv options.

The Panasonic Plasma has been at the top of my list for a while now and also a Samsung LED....

Basement will be getting a projector and that will be sometime over the winter. In fact I may put my 60" tv down there for a while and just wire for projector and surround sound while finishing the basement.

Nick, where was your friend able to get that TV for $999....~$1500 is where I see most of the prices for that TV
 
Last year's model at Costco, they had 1 left and the new line had already come out.
It's no different than the TV people were paying $2000 for when it first came out.

Yeah Costco and Sams Club are good places to shop to big TV's. Plasmas are a great choice for the price but most have a glossy screen which reflects light if your room has windows or overhead lights. I'd go with a quality brand LED but skip the smart tv stuff too. You can get all of that stuff in a DVD blue ray player now days...
 
I am a loyal fan of Vizio from now on. Vizio is pretty good on price, with great looking tv's and lots of options such as smart tv's. Lots of tv for the money. Also get it from costco. Cheaper and longer warranty. I stay away from samsung tvs at all cost. Bad experience
 
I've had my 60" Vizio led for almost a year now and it has been awesome.. Great picture and great price.. I paid about $880 at Costco after a $90 instant rebate.. Oh and it's a Smart tv too :)
 
Exactly! I mean I'm only packin a 32" lcd but I got it for cheap from costco and haven't had a single issue. Its even got the speakers on the front of it, unlike theother designs. Vizios new m series which are razer slim are sexy as hell!
 


I bought a 50" Samsung smart TV from Costco in July. I should have bought a LG non smart tv and get the "smart" surround LG sound system instead. Reason being to go with LG is it supports way more video formats that are stored on my Netword Attached Storage box.
