Flashing security light

Ok guys I have a 2000 Grand Prix in which I just replaced the rear speakers and some how I broke my car key while doing so. I didn't have a spare so I went to GM and got a new key made. I went through the 30 minute procedure programing the chip inside the key and when I went to start the car, the battery was dead, recharged it and ran the car for a day and in that time the security light would flash while driving it. Went to GM and they said the car security module needed replaced but I never had that problem before using my old key. I unplugged the battery for 10 minutes and went through the programming again and drove the car with the security flashing again for about 10 minutes then the light went off. Started it today and the security light starting flashing again. Anyone have any ideas

Just to make sure that you're programming the key correctly:

30-Minute Re-Learn Procedure Use this procedure after replacing the following components:

  • The keys
  • The theft deterrent module
  • The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if necessary, see important above.

  • Turn the ignition switch to RUN, with the engine OFF using a master PASSKey®III Key (Black).
  • Observe the SECURITY indicator. After approximately 10 minutes the indicator will turn off.
  • Turn the ignition switch to LOCK, and wait 5 seconds.
  • Repeat steps 1 through 3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes. Important: The vehicle learns the key information and/or passwords on the ignition switch transition from OFF/LOCK to RUN. You must turn the ignition switch OFF/LOCK before attempting to start the vehicle.
  • Start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key and password information.
  • With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.
Quick Learn Procedure – Keys Only Important:

  • As many as 10 additional master keys (black) or valet keys (gray) may be added using this procedure when there is an available learned master key (black).
  • This procedure adds keys only, it does not erase previously learned keys.
  • The keys to be learned must duplicate the mechanical cut of the current key.
  • If more than one valet key (gray) is to be learned, each must be immediately preceded by a learned master key (black).

  • With a previously learned master key (black), turn the ignition switch to RUN, with the engine OFF.
  • Remove the key from ignition key cylinder.
  • Within 10 seconds, insert the key to be learned (either black or gray) and turn the ignition switch to RUN, with the engine OFF. The vehicle has now learned the new key.
If you programmed the key correctly, it sounds like the dealer is correct:

1. Did you perform the diagnostic system check for the theft deterrent? Yes, Go to Step 2 No, Go to Diagnostic System Check - Theft Deterrent

2. Use a scan tool in order to check for current Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in the theft deterrent module. Are there any DTCs in the theft deterrent module? Yes, Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List/Type
No, Go to Step 3

3.

Did you complete the repairs? Yes, Go to Step 4

4. Inspect the vehicle for proper operation. Refer to Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) Operation.
Did you find and correct the condition? Yes, System OK No, Go to Diagnostic System Check - Theft Deterrent

I wouldn't expect any links you'll see in my posts will work. You'll need a password I can't give you.

Number (2) is the theft deterrent module.

I am pretty sure I went through the programming correctly. I was going to keep trying to program the key a few more times just in case I missed something. I don't have an issue with the light coming on and flashing because it does go out after about ten minutes while driving the car and I haven't had any problems starting it. I guess what I am concerned about mostly is getting stranded. I called my mother back in Pa and she is sending all the spare GM keys that were laying in a draw. Would it cause a problem if I found the other original spare?

I'm pretty sure you'd need to reprogram the keys.

I haven't received another key yet but the car seems to be doing ok. I start the car and after about ten minutes the flashing security stops and goes out. I have read you cannot reprogram keys that already got learned so I guess I am just going to have to put a piece of tape over the light. Hopefully I wont get stranded. Can you actually reprogram a key that has already been programmed? I have tried reprogramming it, but I am not sure if I am waisting my time. I just ordered a new transponder key from eBay and since the one I am using now shows the security flashing, is it ok to do the 30 minute procedure on the new key

Looks like I ran out of options after trying another key. BCM bad? I know it could be any thing. I even got another key fob to try to program and that doesn't even work either. Any ideas

Finally got the other key fob to program but still got the security light flashing for 10 minutes and then everything is fine. Haven't had any problems starting or anything like that. Probably better off with just living with the flashing light.

Curious if you've solved this problem or if the light is still blinking. I've recently had a similar issue but my light doesn't stops blinking after 10 minutes.
