Few questions about engine oil

I run a K&N or Mobil 1 filter and Mobil 1 0w30 year round. As others have said the first number indicates cold thickness. Fact is when the oil is cold its always thicker than when hot so 0w30 is never thinner when the engine is hot then 10w30 is. It stays more consistent overall. If you are in an area that sees -30 or -40 even the owners manual tells you to run 0w30 at least on newer GPs.

Ask a bunch of car guys about oil and you will get a bunch of answers.
Since it gets really cold you might go with Mobil 1 0w40. It is what we have been running in our race cars so you will get the best of both worlds. The only issue you will notice is the piston slap when the engine is cold on a hot day. Doesnt hurt anything, just normal slop in a 3.8. Just stay away from Pennzoil and Quacker State unless you like a mucked up motor and stuck rings. Filters, about any name brand, Fram WIX etc. None of them do much more than filter gravel. For those of you who just want to know what's best, here's a breakdown of the top 3 oil filters; AMSOIL, Mobil 1, Pure 1 provide the greatest filtration efficiency in the tests I've seen. Mobil 1 and Pure 1 both achieved 93% overall filtration efficiency on the SAE HS806 test. AMSOIL scored a 94%.
