felpro-premiums valve stem seals?

fst

New member
just bought the fel-pro premiums valve stem seals from advanced auto yesterday and went to pick them up today. zzp's site has theirs as a blue-greenish on the valve seals while the ones i got from advanced auto were all black:confused:. the item description clearly states tha they're the viton valve stem seals which a ember told me are the ones im looking for. just making certain i got the right ones although the colors on the valve stem seals are different from the vendor:o. thanks in advance guys

Well I dont know how much color has to do with material in this case, I dont think I have seen any Viton seals that werent the bluish green color. I just recently bought some from PFYC I believe it was and they too were the bluish green color and they clearly stated they were Viton seals.

If Advanced Auto says they are Viton then I would have no reason to dispute them, particularly based on the color alone.

I bet one of two things, either they are Umbrella style versus Positive Stop and or they are Viton Rubber versus Viton.

any huge concern if its the viton rubber or the 'regular' vitons(what are these made of then?)?

I believe the straight Viton, with stands more heat than the rubber. I would call Fel-Pro and ask them, especailly since there is a difference and find out about the Positive Stop verus Umbrella style. Everything I've look at that was straight Viton has been blue-green and Postive stop.

any chance u know the number? i tried google search but came up with federal mogul:confused:

I can't find the number either. They (federal mogul) say they do not answer consumer questions directly.

What was the part number of the seals you bought?

i believe it was SS72144 from advanced auto. from the federal mogul site they have the descriptions on both umbrella and positive:
"Federal-Mogul’s Fel-Pro valve stem seals control the lubrication of the valve stem as it slides in the valve guide. Federal-Mogul gasket sets always include the correct valve stem seals to do the job. Premium valve stem seals are used in the set whenever engine designs demand their use.

Fel-Pro valve stem seals include both deflector (umbrella-type) seal designs that move with the valve stem to shield the valve guide from excess oil, and positive seal designs that wipe and meter oil on the stem as it passes through the seal.

Positive seals attach to the valve guide boss. They work like a squeegee, wiping and metering oil on the stem as it passes through the seal.

Demand quality valve stem seals and trust Fel-Pro to provide them."

edit-so do i want the umbrella-deflector type or the positive seals that allow oil to pass thru the seals?

You got the right ones for a GM 3.8L, I'm just not sure what the differences are. Federal mogul isn't very helpful.

hmm....i hope so...but one thing bothers me from the fed-mogul site description. it says the positive seals attaches to the 'valve guide boss' but doesnt say so for the umbrella-deflective types.

Trannyman get the fel-pro ones, maybe he can tell you the part# he uses.

I do a google on this topic and the link to this thread shows about 4th position on the first page.:)

looks like i got these from advanced auto according to the link u supplied:
507-8*
Black Viton (Intake)
(Small O.D. for Triple Spring) .446” 5/16”

also the *.pdf mentioned that the umbrella-style "is normally used when a larger-than-stock diameter spring is used, and in the case of a double spring, the positive-stop Teflon seal is used", in my case im using the 105#springs so i 'think' im ok ^_^;

The last felpro valve seals I got were the same part number as i have always got and they too were black and had MEX molded on the top, so I would assume maybe they are manufactured in Mexico now and also black instead of the bluish green color. Same box and part number and description as they used to be. They are the correct type seal, just black. You should be fine with them.
