F body brakes

I found a 1998 firebird, 3.8L at my local pull it yourself junkyard. i have talked to a few of you in the past about this but am wondering if i need to take the entire hub assembly too? or just the calipers and brakets (rotors on it are shot). if not, how do i put a F body rotor, that has a different bolt pattern than the gp's, on my car? are they close enough that if i buy an aftermarket rotor, it will fit directly to my gp hub? thanks for any help guys.

The F-Body brakes have to be out of a LS1 or a 5.7L car (Same thing). As long as you get them off of that style car you just need the brackets and the calipers. The rotor will fit fine on your car from an LS1 F-Body. Any 98-02 camaro,TransAm,Firebird ect. with the ls1.

You will also have to drill and tap the brackets to your stock bolt size.

I sell the kit's that include everythng you need including new calipers for 214 shipped without the rotors. Everything is pre tapped and will bolt right up. And if you wanted aftermarket rotors I can get you the best price around. If you want regular rotors those should run you around 60 bucks for the front.

now i've talked to a couple of people on here and they said as long as it's a 98-03 (3.8 or LS1) they have the same brake calipers and brackets. i have a set of rotors from a friend who has a 99 LS1 and never used them. so as far as rotors go, i'm set. i just wanted to know if it is true about using a V6 or V8 F body (post 98)?

Well aparently I was misinformed. I looked on my parts sheet anf the part numbers are the same. Sorry for mis informing you.

no that's alright, i just wanted to make sure before going and getting them. that's what we are here for, to learn and share info. i appreciate all your help with the rotor question.

don't forget you also need need the 2 shims like metal piece that go in between the pads and bracket ( 4 pieces total) there's also one in the middle of the caliper, and 2 bolts for the caliper pin guide (total 4 bolts for left and right)

i plan on taking the caliper and the pads all as a unit. the pads look brand new. i'll prob. take everything that comes off from the caliper bracket right out to the caliper. i'm not sure about the shim betweent he pads and the bracket? you're talking about the chatter shims for the pads?. want to make sure i get everything i need. i'll prob take everything that i remove, right down to the caliper bracket bolts. should cover it right?

Make em look like this....
Powdercoated!!!

when I was combing the salvage yards for mine I did see a camaro with a single piston caliper sitting next to the car I got me 2 piston calipers off of. I think both were V6 cars.

yea i would def powdercoat them, i have a guy i go to that owns a powdercoating co. locally. i think that the camaro's you saw, justwhisen, are 2 different years. pre 98 had smaller calipers and rotors, and post had the ones we want for gp's. that's what i was so confused about. i was talking to people on here in the past and they told me this, then i got some mixed info, got it straight tho. getting them now. lata

i got my calipers and brackets today for $34 (including tax and core). i'm going to powdercoat them. is there a rebuild kit i should buy while having my calipers out (ie seals, etc)? i wanted to do this while i'll have it apart for the powdercoater. also, anyone recommend rotors or pads? is there anone who did any mods to their rear brakes, or just put slotted rotors on all 4 corners?

nice job silverbullet, i especially like the cobra wheels in front of those calipers! did you do any mods to the rear brakes?

both the monte and gp calipers are powder coat. also i went to the dealer and got a new caliper dust boots for it. cost like $60 for the 4 boots:mad:. the rotor on the gp came off my monte carlo. took them to murray and have them cut it. both the cars rear calipers are still stock. i'm hoping to do a gxp rear upgrade in the future.

what's the gxp upgrade? i'm thinking of getting slotted rotors and nice pads, any suggestions? i know i'll have to get the camaro/firebird rotors for the front, but i kinda want to match the rears witht he same style or cut.
