Exhaust: Question

I'm currently looking for an exhaust setup for the 2003 grand prix gt 3800 3.8l v6 in my gfs car and I know what I want but its starting to get the best of me cause of all the dang r&d I'm doing to figure out what will work and willn't work. The main focus is I want (4) 4in double walled rolled slash cut tips! Now heres where I need help do I do a full exhaust kit and pour a ton of money in to a pre-assembled kit only to hack it up so I can have the tip setup I want or what? Whats the best route to go as well chrome or polished tips which will handle the heat better even though I looking at double walled tips? Please help me here as I want flow and looks over sound kinda need to keep it on the quiet side so as to not disturb neighbors at her apartment.

I ended up just grabing a used exhaust off a 06+ v8 impala and putting the tips i wanted on it, its all how much you want to spend really, you don't have to worry about flow in a n/a.. just get rid of the ubend in the exhaust if you want more flow.

You can get some quiet mufflers and have tips welded to them.

These cars' factory catback is very efficient...you won't see flow issues until 350~WHP...and that's heads/cam/supercharged territory...far from her 170~WHP N/A car.

I'd suggest Dynomax Super turbo mufflers, a u-bend delete while you're under there, and whatever tips you want. Think 3.5"~ dual/duals?

Those always fill up the bumper the best IMO.

What's wrong with cutting off the current tips and clamping the new ones on so you can call it a day?

I agree, just change the tips and make an intake for it. The intake will sound better than the exhaust ever will.

Because stock mufflers make the 3800 sound worse than flowmasters.

Buzzkillin, rasp makin', nasty gross sounds.

Ok so best bet would be to delete the ubend which I've seen mid way under the car which is def a restriction and keep stock exhaust but swap to a shorty y-pipe off muffler and do dual twin 4in tips there correct? I've already put a custom CAI on the car I used the stock rubber bellow between the MAF and Stock air box I had a old AFE Diesel CAI that had a 3 1/2in venturi cone (swells out to 6in lip for a huge filter) which I stuffed in the stock bellow and now theres a huge tappered cone filter measures 8in OD at the big end and tappers down to 5-5 1/2in OD and its 10-11in in length filter flows 1100-1200 cfm and it rated for 1000+hp lol. Gets plenty of air sounds wired on a cold start up though becuase its so big lol. No CEL's or SES lights so I left it along.

Yes.

Waaaaaiiiiiiiit a second. It's not a dual exhaust GT? Thought dual mufflers was standard for GT trim. Anyway, if that's the case, you're wrong, as the muffler is the part the tips clamp on to. You'd want to do a y-pipe after the resonator to a new stock muffler, giving you two mufflers.

Personally, I'd just find a junkyard dual exhaust and swap it. Much easier, possibly cheaper.

The car is a Grand Prix GT with a stock exhaust that from the cat back goes into a hard bend over a crossmember then back to a stock y-pipe that seperates off to two stock mufflers with rectangular/circle shaped (feels like cast) tips. They are the slip on factory style pontiac tips. I'm just looking to do something like this 2002 Grand Prix GT Exhaust - YouTube want the looks not the sound.

Sorry, I misunderstood you. Yeah. Just cut the tips off and clamp on your two fresh Y-shaped tips. Don't fab your own tips; that's silly. Plenty of vendors make Y-shaped dual tips.

Actually their 3.5" tips. I have them, they look great imo. Got em off ebay for about $90. I had them welded on, clamps are for indecisive pussies. Lol
