Exhaust flange gasket direction???

Which way does the flange gasket go on? There is an "indented" circle and I was just curious if that is supposed to face the cat or the resonator. Here are the pics:

As you can see here is the "bump out" side with the part number stamp on it.

and here is the "bump in" side without the part number stamp.

Thanks!

Technically, it shouldn't matter, as the theory behind those gaskets is that they are compressible (footprint) gaskets, but per GM Service docs, the "bump out" side is to go to the manifold, as it's the more rigid surface.

So "the "bump out" side is to go to the manifold" .... towards the cat?... since that's the direction of the manifold?

this is going between the cat and the resonator on the down pipe.

....gotta make it dummy proof for the dummy installing it :th_biggrin2:

My best guess is the flange being warped (see my pm reply) but yes, toward the thicker of the flanges. Dammit, put an LS in that thing so I can reply without thinking. LOL.

........there's a GTO for sale when I dropped in to get the gasket.... ughh, I'm too upside down to get it though :(

guess I'll bring out the BFH tomorrow while I got it on the lift.

Whiskey, tango, Fox... Anyway, I just suggested trying to re-warp the flange in the opposite direction so as to preload it to combat the tendancy to horseshoe bend it when tightening it...

GTO...Dooo Ettt... I am fighting the urge to get Mel a G8 GT...

If I would actually get to drive it, I would talk the wife into getting it.... but I just can't justify buying something and then letting it bake in the sun for a year.... maybe when I get back.

....though, I'll test drive anything for fun :)

I'm just gonna use the BFH and wack the crap out of the flanges. Do you suppose there is such a thing as too far back?

Uh, Yeah, I would say there is such a thing... Try the LBFH. ;) Or, try a 1/4" extension between the top and bottom, and gently tighten to achieve the desired warp. ;)

although, I really want to know what you're tightening with the 1/4" extension... and top and bottom of what?
