Ever bypassed the power steering pump?

In my experience, belts are usually $10-20-- much cheaper than a $150+ tow. I use to be pretty big into Mx6, Mx3, Probe, 626, and some guys would swap out the rack and pinion for a manual rack, so info on a shorter bypass belt is pretty easy to come by. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask if similar info is available for the 3.8, that's all.

Turns out he was about a mile away from home, so he just drove it after it cooled. Looks like it'll be sitting until we get a chance to fix it this weekend. Thanks for all the info, I always find this place to be helpful.

His power steering pump failed before, and I replaced it and needed to turn the wheel for some reason with no PS assistance-- it was definitely not fun, but it WAS a decent workout.

For the record, the PS pump can be bypassed for emergency situations. I will update this thread later with info on the belt. This isn't a permanent solution, but can get you short distances if your PS pump freezes, without causing damage.

Ever driven a Sherman Tank through Quiksand?

Yeah, no thanks.

I'll keep a whinin' ol pump anyday over that mess.

That still does not answer my question. The answer to your question is apparent, so answer mine.

Have YOU ever driven a Sherman tank through quicksand?

See Post 1 in thread.

Seriously.

I did.

But you don't have a few bucks to yank one from the junkyard before you go there?

Your going to spend more money in gas going back and forth from the auto parts store/hardware store than it would be buying a used pump in the yard...from any Series II/III 3800 car.

I'm interested. I have heard of and found a Riviera guy that bypassed. Just didn't see this post in time to help.

It is possible, as all the accessories can be turning the proper way...but .. what size is the question.
