Engine whines and loses power randomly

I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. When accelerating my engine makes a very annoying high pitched whine. And when I accelerate going up a hill it will randomly loss power making it so that I have to stomp the gas pedal ruining my economy. Any ideas on what might cause these things?

do the lights dim? maybe the alt...

Could be low on transmission fluid. Or power steering fluid. I'd check both.

When's the last time you had a tune-up?

I've checked both the transmission fluid and the power steering fluid. Both are full. I also haven't noticed the lights dimming. This car has never had a real tune up though it should.

Could be many things.

We will need more info to figure out if it's a vacuum leak, ps pump, bad alt etc etc.

Could be a clogged up fuel filter causing the pump to work harder. I've heard some pumps whine more loudly than others. Ever changed the fuel filter? How many miles on your 00 GT?

I also have noticed a high pitched wine when accelerating on my 2000 GT.

do the lights dim? maybe the alt...

When you ask do the lights dim does it count if when you tap the brakes they dim?
