Engine/Transmission Rattle

I have a 1988 with a 3.8/440-T4. There is a loud rattle toward the engine/transmission area. The muffler man thought it was transmission noise. The transmission man did not think it was the transmission, but an exhaust problem. Catalytic convertor and all check out fine. Transmission shifts well. Fluid looks good. We have not yet pulled the transmission pan to check for metal. There seems to be a rattle problem with older vehicles with this engine/transmission mate. Any thoughts what this might be? It has 86,000 miles and the transmission was supposed to have been rebuilt about three years ago. I just recently bought it.
