engine running for poo

Hey all, '95 Grand Prix SE 3.1 is really giveing me a headache. I have to crank it for about a minute or two to get it to start, then when it starts it may idle fine, but when I take off, if I don't baby it (and I mean baby it) it'll die. If I tromp on it it it'll die. If I am running errands in it, if I am too long before getting back to the car it'll start, then die then not start for about an hour and a half (until then engine has cooled). I have no idea what this is all about but I am about ready to just have it junked.

Does it throw any codes? If it does you might try checking to see which ones it might be throwing. Honestly it sounds like a MAF...if it is...instead of buying the $100+ sensor you can buy some MAF cleaner and see if that works...if not...might have to shell out the money for one.

I haven't checked for codes, I don't have one of those fancy code checkers. I'll try cleaning the MAF sensor and see what happens. Thanks much.

Well, I'm trying to find the MAF sensor. I haven't checked any codes yet but I plan on doing that when I am in town tomorrow. As for the MAF sensor, I've looked everywhere that its supposed to be. According to my chiltons and the autozone website it supposed to be between the air cleaner and the ducting to the throttle body. I've taken that whole business apart at there isn't anything but the top of the airbox and the rubber duct the goes to the throttle body, nothing in between. Could it be possible that my car doesn't have a MAF sensor?

So I went to OReilly and they plugged their code checker into my car and said they can't connect to the computer. I'm not really sure what that means, but the guy said it probably isn't good.

means they tried to read the code with an obdII scanner, but its a hybrid system, half obd2 half obd1, called 1.5 by many. i read on a corvette sight to jump pin 4, on top fromt he left, with 12, right under fout. it might work with this car, it will make your check enginge light blink out the code. i need to try this on my, 94 gp se wth the 3.1, its just too late to do it in my neighbor hood at 4 am
