Engine overheating?

My 2000 Grand Prix GTP has been getting alot hotter than it normally does. Usually it stays between 160 and the first line above that for the engine temp. But now its starting to get just below 210. It NEVER gets that high, and I am not even driving it that hard.
 


coolant elbows? last time it was flushed ? it have dexcool or green stuff? im dealing with these issues, and put almost everything new in...maybe its the lim gaskets?
 
My temp reading on my dash is about the same, also my scan gauge reads about 15* lower than the dash does. As far as I know, your within normal stock temps.
 


Check your coolant level and bleed the air out. Check your water pump. Feel underneath it for wetness. Also look right below the SC snout to see if there is some coolant build up there, if it is then it is the plastic elbow connecting the alternator bracket to the intake.

My coolant level is fine, but there is gunk in the radiator cap. How do you bleed the air out?

Wrong and wrong.

The 180 thermostat will only keep temps cooler while driving. The fans will not come any sooner than before. Stock fan settings are 214 and 228 IIRC.

If you had your PCM tuned/flashed then those setting could be changed, but for you everything is still the same and it will still heat soak fast in traffic because the fans have not been changed.

But like others have said, you could try a coolant flush and bleed the air out for peace of mind.

Why wouldnt we be talking about temps while driving. He didnt say idle temps.
 
Yea try flushing the cooling system. It's pretty easy to do. I can't think of what the stuff is called but buy a bottle of radiator flush or cooling system flush and just follow the directions on the bottle. And yea you are going to need to replace the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets if you havent already, they commonly fail. There is a good how to on this forum with a video if your handy with tools.
 


Nm my avg temp is 185. I also did a little reding up on tstat function, I see the error in my ways. Good call five.
