Engine Dies in Drive

I have a 1997 grand prix gtp sc. My engine died 5 or six times driving it home. The engine died when i was stopped at a light with my foot on the brake. I tried throwing my car into Neutral at the next light and the car would run fine. no flucuation in the rpms. when i threw it into to drive rpms shoot up and has a hard time getting going. any ideas?

whats the torque converter? basically when im stopped i throw my car into neutral and rev my engine up to 2k and throw it into drive and the car jolts and moves rough until i get up to 20 or so. It drives fine on the highway. How difficult is a torque converter to operate on? any advice? should i just bring it into the shop? im just sick of the headache.

Buy a used one there for your car and tell them your part of the GP community...most of the time they cut you a deal.

OR...

Try to find one on here...I think someone was sellin' one but I can't remember if it was a L36 or L67 Converter. You gotta yank the motor or drop the transmission...either or...its not fun...but can be done in a few hours if you know what your doing. My suggestion...if you don't know what your doing and don't feel comfortable tackling it I'd take it to a transmission shop so you get a warranty on it so you don't have to worry about it again...or at least worry about PAYING for it again.
