Engine compartment fire.

Ok....so I get smoke coming from under the hood. I stop and take a look and lo and behold at the back of the engine, centered and up close to the firewall there is a small fire going on. About the size of a candle flame. I leave it parked and get a ride home. I research it and find the recall notice for this problem. Just wondering if anyone who has had this to happen to them and if they followed the recall protocol, and how did it go? Any suggestions on what to expect/watch out for? Thanks in advance for any comments.

What vehicle and motor?

The recall for some was to replace the rear valve cover gasket itself. The new front valve cover recall has been issued but has not started yet.

I bet oil got to the exhaust manifold and started a fire. I'd replace both valve cover gaskets and gromments and be done with it. The job isnt very hard, maybe a little time consuming.

It's a 97 GP with the type II 3800 V6. Yeah. It's getting old and probably needs the valve cover gaskets replaced. Was wondering what the GM vehicle dealers attitude would be having to do recall work on a vehicle no longer in production.

they will still do the recall, but its only the front valve cover they work on.......so buy new v/c gaskets and put them on.
