Engine code deciphering

right now my engine is not working, and I have not been able to fix it. So I've been searching for a replacement, I think I've found one with low milage on it, just that when the owner sent me the engine numbers, well, I have not been able to find out any info on the net about the year of the engine. He told me it was either a 1996, or 97 or 98 ... my car is a 98 gtp and this motor is definately an gtp, cause it has the S/C on it.

The info he sent me is ... 60er bkz-aa 10bkz and b0216715

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Chuck

right beside the part number it'll say "SERIES II" if its a series II or III.

Unfortunately every series II and up uses the same block.

Oh, well is that not sweet of GM ... was hoping there would be some info for a date on them numbers. '0'
Thanks for the reply Matt.

My research says that GM went to series II in 1997 and series III in 04 ... so my fingers are crossed that it is a series II, being he did not really know the year.

NA series II arrived in 95
SC series II arrived in 96
In 98 pins arrrived for the LIM end seals.

Chuck, a picture of the SC would give us more info.

I would post BillBoost, but everytime I try to upload, it looks for an url...
Just found out, it is a series II and it has, I mean .. only has 39,843 kms on it :) That's sweet.

Thanks for Your help Matt.

Here's a 96/97 motor. The way to tell is there is a black vacuum tree on the sc by the TB on the front. The 98+ does not have that.

BillBoost, unfortunately for me, this motor I bought did not come with a S/C on it. That plus a few other facts, for example, no exaust manifolds, is how I managed to talk him down in price :)

Matt included some block numbers, so I'll compare them, hoping it is a 98 or newer, will the 96 work? If for some mis-fortune that is what I have?

I'm confused,, ... I just got the code off the block ... it is 24506029 ... also says 3800 II series
But ...
I took my S/C off my 98 gtp and it does not fit, :*(

Is there different types of S/C's out there?

Alrite, took fuel rail off to try, and it does not fit, so it is obvious an S/C motor... am I able to take the S/C and head off my blown motor and add it on this one?

What would headers accomplish?
More air flow...
So, guess I need head gasket, and as hitman says, get head re-grinded from my car before installing onto the new motor.
Is it worth the effort?
Or should I now sell this motor which I now know is a non-S/C 3800 and look for another 3800 which is an S/C 3800?
Learning experience ... that is for sure!

if the engine is a non s/c, the pistons will be setup for 9.4 static compression ratio (versus 8.5 of the s/c engine) which requires either a permanently open bypass valve (Not the best of ideas, but it can work) or some sort of exhaust flow mod to run with the supercharger with a stock pulley.

You could also install a 4.0-4.2 " pulley on the blower.

It can add up real quick but supercharged engines are pricey in Ontario.
