Emissions testing in your state/province ?

Created new thread so as to quit hijacking Brandonhall's S10 build thread. I read quite a few of you guys run cat deletes, muff deletes or other mods that would be a FAIL in my state (R.I.) Our emissions test is lumped in with bi-annual inspections, tires, brakes, lights, rust etc. I understand some states have no inspections. But if we didn't do emissions the Feds wouldn't match our bond money for roads and bridges, something like 20% us 80% them. And yes, we pay gas tax, high reg renewals, and although it doesn't go to roads, Town/City tax on vehicle value(like a house) on in most cases, a fire tax on vehicles too (like houses). And the roads are still poor at best. Is it because we're a small state with a comparatively higher # of road miles and bridges? How do other states deal with infrastructure deficiencies without all that "free" Fed $ ? I think the figure here is around 80% of all bridges are "structurally deficient" Sucks, right? Our She-Gov is poised to start tolling large trucks "only" (with some sort of an exemption for in-state owned trucking companies) but the feeling around here is that cars are almost a definite in the near future. Something like 17 gantries in a 40 mile state? I'm pretty sure we're taking a royal porking right now, with it about to get worse. I'm curious to hear some of your comments, if you wouldn't mind...Maybe this should be in the RANT forum instead, lol. Yours, Truly, Overburdened in Rouge Island.....God help us all....Thanks, Gents....E

Nothing in my state of Minnesota, just higher county taxes depending on where you live and vehicle reg taxes.

I just had to renew my drivers licence and that was $25 and just got my truck tab renewal in the mail today. It's $237 this year being that it's a 2012, after 10 years the vehicles drop to a flat fee of around $50 now.

Tada

No inspections in Minnesota and we still get Fed funding for roads. Not sure why the difference. Our roads are not the best either. Infrastructure is an expensive thing. Some day people will get that. Most people spend $100-150 a year on gas tax and then vehicle sales tax and registration fees are the only sources of road funding. Heck I think I shell out $1600 to the school district $1400 to the county and $1200 to the city in property taxes. I'd pay some more in gas tax for better roads. Heck double it and it's still small.

Thanks, nox, but not looking to delete cat. I was just wondering how many of you don't have to pass emissions, heck or a regular inspection..even. Tada..lol

Certain counties in PA have emissions testing. My county just has visual emissions, meaning they are supposed to look for the cat, egr, etc.

We only pay taxes on our vehicles when you purchase them. No annual taxes there.

Registration on a car is currently $36 a year. Trucks are like $70-$80 depending on size.

Drivers license is $29 every 4 years.

No sales tax on clothes or non-prepared food either.

Let's just say I know a guy. I had an egr delete, illegal tint, and tinted tails at the time of inspection. For the cat delete I just use a hollowed out high flow cat and an o2 emulator when inspection time comes because all they do here is safety and obd2, no tailpipe sniffer, etc.

What is emissions testing?

Missouri turns on your headlights...hits the brakes.

Some dude with meth teeth is like: Does it start? Does it have tires and windows?

Yup?

*here's your sticker*

In Pima county metro (Tucson):

Brand new vehicles are exempt for like 5 years or something like that.
'96 and newer get the OBDII check. No MIL and a good gas cap = pass. Usually no visual.
'66 to '95 go on the rollers and get sniffed. Under the CO and HC limits and have any gas cap = pass. Usually a visual.
'65 and older are exempt.
All "Heavy Duty" trucks (at or above 8500 GVWR) go on the rollers regardless of age. Probably a visual.

The tests are strictly for emissions systems and cost $12.25. If you fail, you are allowed to re-test as many times as it takes within 30 days of the initial test at no extra cost. No safety check. Outside of the city limits requires no test. Maricopa metro (Phoenix) is similar.

NJ used to be rather hard to even pass when your car was in good shape. today all they give a crap about is that the cel is off and you have a cat.

light duty commercial trucks like pick ups and any thing under 24,000 gvw they check everything. i mean everything.

best part is inspection is free and good for 2 years at the state locations, or you can pay at a shop, but thats dumb aint it?

Wow, thanks for all those responses... Weird how things can be so different, State, County....... City limits ??? For those of you with NO safety inspections, (sounds pretty dangerous to me, maybe that where all those video with tires&wheels flying off and going in the opposite lane of travel come from ? ) especially in rust bound states, they really let you drive until the car just starts falling apart? Here in R.I. it's a State "wide" inspection, shops need certifications to do it, same price everywhere, if it fails you can fix it on your own ( 5 day tag ) and get the re-test for free, or have the shop do it (kind of a conflict of interest, I think). There is 1 State run inspection facility, but no one wants to go there because they've got nothing better to do but go over your stuff with a microscope ! I think it's mostly there to settle disputes between shops & customers, or to punish repeat offenders that the cops are sick of... like " If I see you racin' around in my town again, Imma gonna impound this thing and take it to Cranston and they'll take this thing apart ! "

Oh, you guys may not believe me, but the State run facility is located on.............Pontiac Avenue !!! look it up.

You would think there would be more instances of that in places with no inspection, but people are generally pretty good about self policing. Even people with little to no mechanical knowledge are generally smart enough to know when a vehicle isn't (at the very least) safe to be on the road. The human species has a pretty strong desire to survive.

I have seen wheels come off of vehicles that came directly from a repair facility. You know... a place where the people are trained to inspect/repair vehicles.

i see cars on the side of the hwy with one front wheel toed on or out all the way. clearly a busted tie rod, now tell me you didnt feel that for the last how many months? morons right there. and we have a do nothing inspection now.

hell i passed a few years back with a busted side view mirror, bald tires abs and brake light on. they dont even care if the brake lights dont work no more. they are trying to faze it out for the last 10 years or so now. no cel, you pass pretty much.

you never see this sheet unless they fail you, no cat, tampering. instant fail here.

get caught driving with this sticker over due, or with this red failed sticker after 30 days and you looking at a 300 dollar fine too.

I do hear from time to time of people getting killed here and there from mechanical failures on their vehicles. But, our state has such a low population compared to some of the others, I don't think they care enough.

95 and older are exempt.
05 and older commercial are exempt
25yo+ are exempt

Brand new you have 4 years, everything else is every 2 years.
Drive up, unplug aero, they put their dildo plug into mine, 60 seconds later I drive away in my emissions removed passed vehicle.
No safety, thats for commercials 8k and above.

nothing is exempt here, not even the classic cars, or pre 95. they pop the hood hook stuff up under there, then run it on the rollers with the sniffer. seen em doing it last trip out, guy was super stoked it passed lol
