Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the EGR only open for exhaust when its not under WOT?

You'll want to check on local inspection laws about it too since most states require that you keep all the original emissions equipment. Just saying you might have issue when it comes time for inspection.
 


Hey, is this something we can discuss at length, the EGR that is. Its one area of the car I dont personally really understand well. Id really like to understand the pro's and con's in blocking off the EGR. I saw Farnsworth mention one, keeping the intake clean, THAT alone would nearly convince me to do it.

Anyway, lets keep this going, get some info together and I can get this posted up in the How To section or somewhere it will be available for everyone to learn from.

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation system is used to lower the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission levels that are caused by high combustion temperatures. The EGR does this by decreasing combustion temperature.

The main element of the system is the linear EGR valve. The EGR valve feeds small amounts of exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber. When the exhaust gases dilute the fuel-to-air mixture, combustion temperatures are reduced.

The linear EGR valve is supplies the EGR to the engine independent of the intake manifold vacuum. The valve controls the EGR flow from the exhaust to the intake manifold through an orifice with a PCM-controlled pintle. During operation, the PCM controls the pintle position by monitoring the pintle position feedback signal. The feedback signal can be monitored with the scan tool Actual EGR Pos. The Actual EGR Pos should always similar to the commanded EGR position (Desired EGR Pos). The PCM uses information from the following sensors in order to control the pintle position:

*The engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
*The throttle Position (TP) sensor
*The Mass Airflow (MAF).

The linear EGR valve is usually activated during the following conditions:

*Warm engine operation
*Above idle speed
 
WAIT! The whole point of the EGR is to DECREASE combustion temperature?

Okay, lets work through this.
To reduce emmisions, caused by high combustion temperatures they recirculate part of the exhaust gases back to the intake where:

1. It gums up the intake track reducing intake effiency
2. Dilutes the AFR so we need to use more fuel

So in order to appease the tree huggers (sorry if that offends but I have some pretty sharp views on that) and reduce whats coming out the tail pipe by way of increasing what we have to put in the tank? Someone please explain that logic to me.

High combustion temperatures create the NOX gas...which is part of the "cause" of acid rain if you will.

If you run less AFR, while being less efficient.....it uses less fuel. That's why removing the EGR system causes your economy to drop...you're getting more clean air into the engine...so you can use more fuel to increase the HP.

Easiest Way to get to it would be to take off the front 2 dogbones, rock the engine forward and set the emergency break. You will have 10 times more room to work when you do this. It is at the right rear of the block.
 
so what kind of hp increse are we talkin bout?

So small that no one that I know of has been able to put a number on it. Just unplug the elecrical connection and see how much different it feels. I have a plate that just bolts under the valve itself. One day I swapped the plate out a few times and noticed no diffence.

I don't understand the above quote from you. If you are saying with the EGR, it is less efficient, it should use more fuel. But you say less efficient means it uses less fuel? I am confused.

In my experience, I left mine on my car since I never had a reason to take it off. But I developed a crack in one of the EGR tubes, and it created a massive vacuum leak. So instead of replacing the tube, I just removed the EGR valve. I used my PT and returned my VE, MAF and timing, and I did not notice any drop in fuel efficiency. Again, this is my experience.
