Ebrake light when ebrake not engaged

I'm not sure if this belongs in another section but anyway, I've noticed the last couple days the ebrake/parking brake light lit up on my dash at random times. I'll just be driving along and it will come on, then go out a few seconds or a minute or two later. So far as I can tell, my brakes and the ebrake itself are functioning fine, no noises or anything odd. When the ebrake light is "stuck" on, setting/releasing the ebrake itself won't make it go out, pressing gas or regular brakes seems to have no effect either I just have to wait for it to go off on its own. Kind of disconcerting to be going down the road and suddenly see that light pop up.

What is causing this?

I had this happen on a car (71 Firebird) and it turned out the be that the switch on the e-brake was out of adjustment, pretty simple to fix.
Also, you did not indicate what kind of car that your having this problem with.

I didn't want to start another thread for the same problem...
My '99 bonnie is having the same problem with the light coming on for the parking brake on the dash. Where would I begin to look for this switch for the e-brake? I already crawled under the car and had someone else engage and disengage the brake and the cable appears to move freely.

check your master cylinder fluid level, theres a sensor for low fluid on the side of it.

if the fluid is low top it off and all should be good.

That fixed it. Thanks.
Do I need to be worried about a leak? I am embarrassed to say that I haven't payed attention to the mc in like 10,000 miles.
Also, I learned that the bonnie has an audible alarm for it... most annoying drive to the parts store ever.

you most likely need new brakes real bad,

as the pads wear out the fluid drops. when it gets that low you need to check your pad wear, or if they are still good start looking for a leak.
