Dyno Tune at 230 tom..any guesses?

hahaha holy egt temps, valves will look like playdoh, these cars need at least 15-16* wot. I hope you didn't pay this guy.

Ok, seriously... If you command 16 and the car runs 10 degrees because of knock, you are saying that is better? Just curious, does the knock somehow lower the EGT temps? Pieces of pistons flying through your engine are probably fine though...Its amazing how lightly some people take engine knock and detonation.

Regardless of your "theory", the dyno session shows what the car actually wanted to run safely and make the most power...

I'd like to say that I don't consider myself an experienced tuner, most tunes do tend to run more timing. It seems odd that there was that much knock and timing needs to be that low.

Being the tuner and not the mechanic that put it together, you wouldn't have the insight of what was done to the motor, maybe a bad knock sensor or other mechanical issues that may exist.

I've seen some cars that had a similar amount of knock that didn't seem to follow the norms for the drivetrain. In one case, the knock sensor had been bumped and broken. Changing that out, made it possible for the engine to run much better. I'm merely tossing out some reasons that may be holding the timing/power level back a bit as it seems low.

This is not most likely what is going to happen...You have no idea what you are talking about.

I don't know what I'm taking about? You might not have rigged the dyno like a lot of shops do, but you certainly took the wrong approach to tuning this car. I would wager any amount of money that I could add another 10-15whp over what your "tune" made.

Im still curious as to how much it cost to have this done.

I am subscribed to this thread because I would really like to know what kind of tuning parameters and such as I'm heading toward a similar setup as the op. Im trying to wade through all the bs to see what the facts about this pulley/tuning setup really requires.

I've contacted will at overkill and immediately heard back from him which I really liked. I think I'm going to go with a canned tune as it is more affordable and I'm on a very tight budget at this point.

I hear a custom tune is best and I agree but I can't afford to buy a tuner at this point. I guess my point is, is this common to run that much kr with overkills tuning or should I just hold out and get custom tuned down the road?

Nick, with the amount of conflict you've had with experienced tuners, it's funny that you weighed in on what you say is the "wrong approach". It seems that your approach is wrong, but in a backwards way seems to work well for you.

The rigged dyno is hilarious, explains how some folks get their inflated numbers.

I don't really have an issue with experienced tuners. I usually get into it with people who just think they're experienced. The guys who tune a lot of other cars like n/a v8 or 4 cyl turbo cars and then apply that experience to the s/c 3800 are leaving a lot of good power on the table. I'm not sure how my approach is wrong... I'd immediately pulley up, add a half point to the AFR and then run 17-18 degrees of timing. This is a crude explanation as there is more to it than that, but you get the just of it...

Instant 10-15whp gains and a car that runs much stronger.

Like I offered the OP, I can do a custom tune on a dyno, likely for less money than a canned tune. I don't do it to make money, I do it because I enjoy tuning. I'm right in CT if you're ever interested.

Thanks. That's a good drive for me especially with a shot tranny, but thanks

Half the people i've spoken to with an overkill tune report such KR spikes as normal occurence.

Wait, on this site, who has made the most documented whp? The highest number I recall seeing belongs to Snowflake. I'm sure hes a complete backwards novice. Although I don't pretend to understand much about the way he tunes, and I cant speak about the longevity of the motor after he tunes it, I would assume that he may be correct in saying that there is a better way to tune than what AmericanSoldier had done (so now his mods don't net what they should).

That being said, we're on a public forum, so if you are gonna start a thread all about the power your mods will net you, why wouldn't you expect some discussion on the mods themselves? C'mon, grow up, be realistic.

And then, when these same people people support their reasoning, you attack them (like you did to Nixon) and their car? YOU are the one who stepped completely out of line, not them. So don't get pissy about whatever happens after.

And furthermore, while I absolutely respect you serving, and I thank you, that doesn't mean that because you're a Iraq Veteran, it makes you sound cool. You dishonor thousands of people who served without using it as a soapbox so they can look cool.

Snowflake?

Are you talking blower cars?

Because Victor was on here...and I'm not talking Victor Smalls either...he made 400+WHP on his GenV setup.

And if we aren't talking blower cars, then there are plenty of turbo cars on here that make well north of 370~ uncorrected, standardized, dyno inconstant, WHP.

You shouldn't be concerned about making more power then, guy.

I have 1st and 2nd. Enough for 1/4 mile runs which is all I really do at this point. A built tranny is in my future. This car isn't my dd so thanks for the input there guy.

Let's keep it reasonable guys. OP is asking for your estimates on power, torque etc.

Not a "I'd do a better job" or "your parts aren't the ones I'd choose".

^^Ditto.

Guy asked for numbers.

Not for your almighty reasonings behind the universe of tuning and dyno's.

So, STFU and keep it on track.

Next out of line person gets a couple of infraction points. Please heed the moderation in this thread.

Yeah buddy.

Yes blower cars; you cant really compare a turbo motor to a blower motor, totally different animal.
And I stand corrected. I do recall something about Victor's car.

Just for the record, my setup is the highest stock heads xp cam, roots supercharged whp ever ;)

Hi,

Isn't this thread about Americansoldiers dyno?

Apparently you can't read about keeping it on track.

Last I checked, go start your own thread about your car and get it locked like you always do. Because you keep this up LIKE YOU'VE BEEN WARNED NOT TO, the OP's thread is going to get locked because of you as well.

Good form.

Now, about this low timing and tune...

Now, about this low timing and tune...

I respected bills wish to keep this thread on topic. However someone else had called my tuning knowledge into question. And someone else mentioned my set up. I think it was important for me to set the record straight because there was a bit of misinformation floating around. When I comment on the OPs tune, and then someone tells me I don't know what I'm talking about, I should have every right to provide evidence to support the fact that I do know what I'm talking about.

I'm not sure why my comments would lead to the locking of this thread, when you've posted at least three comments that have nothing to do with the OP. it would be nice if you could lead by example. If you don't want the thread to get off-topic, stop changing the subject.

I stand behind what I said in terms of the tune that the OP received. It wasn't done correctly and his set up could benefit greatly from a few small changes. I can comment on this because I have extensive 3800 tuning knowledge backed up by countless Dyno runs from a long list of 3800 powered cars.
