Double Din Install



Nope. It's just what happens when you are too poor to pay someone else to do it. I've been doing car stuff for a good 14 years now and if you don't try something then you'll never learn how to do it. This was my first time modding a dash to this extent and patience is the key. Plus if you want it done right you're better off doing it yourself.
 
Thats nice bro great job.:th_thumbsup-wink: I to have been doin system stuff for years and have been thinkin of a way to do that. Time to start savin for an indash.

Well what I did was mount the screen first. I used four banding straps to secure it into the dash. Then I cut out the middle divider and chopped up towards the vents. I then used 1/4 wood to remake the sides to come out to the screen. Then bondo and a lot of sanding. Originally I was going to have the sides come out flat but decided to put some curve into it. SEM makes a texture spray that I used. It really isn't the same texture but you can't tell unless you are up close and trying to pick it apart. The main idea with the texture is that it can't be smooth or you will notice where I did the work. I then just matched the paint up to the closest SEM product and repainted the whole bezel. Oh..and thunder I looked over your install when I was researching what people had done. How did you fill in the gap between the radio and dash? Is it a chopped up single din mount?
 
Yep I cut the sides off of a single din dash kit and used all the mounting hardware and drilled new holes for the mounting screws in the dash were I had to. I am going to get some black foam to fill the gaps where it fits flush eventually.
 
went to a shop round my city and shop said it wouldnt look good,so i got a flip out. should waited. looks damn good
 


yeah nice install on what looks like a kenwood , thinking of doing a pioneer avic d3 in mine , have one from the old days and i know them up one side and down the other . havent done a custom dash in about ooooh 10 years , but now inspired after seeing yours , think its time to break out the dremel , fiberglass and a few other tricks i have
 
Yeah if I had fiberglass skills I could have brought the bezel closer to the sides of the deck. It is necessary to find a dash bezel out of a donor car so your covered. I used a dremel to widen the opening at the top and bottom of the opening a little at a time until it fit snug. Had to trim it all the way up to the bottom of the vents on the top but i would put the deck in the dash hole mount a coupleof the screws and put the dash bezel over it til i got it to fit nice. The foam i was talking about using is to fill the gap on the sides where there is a gap that you can see all the way back to the mounting brackets and thats what I would have filled in with fiberglass ifI could do it.
 
Thanks again for the comments everyone. The shop might have been trying to shy you away from it because of the amount of time it takes to do. They'd have to charge quite a bit to make it worthwhile for them.

Really the biggest thing when doing stuff like this is patience and imagination. For the radio the start was staring at it and figuring out how to attach it into the dash. I used banding straps. Then dremel time removing the material that was in the way. After that a couple pieces of wood and bondo and ALOT of elbow grease sanding and shaping.

I was going to get a 2nd bezel to do but then I thought...what if it turns out the first time? Why have a 2nd bezel hanging around? I ended up driving around with no dash for about 4 days while I worked on this. Take your time and you can get good results.
