Doing 60 at 3 K

So on my way to work and im doing about 60 and i just happen to look at the cluster im doing 60 at 3 k! And when i left off the gas to see if it would switch gears and get back on the gas it would shot up back to 3 k and not switch. PLEase help. i only have 100k for an 01. Thanks

I doubt 4th just let go like that sounds to me like a torque convertor not locking up and keeping the car in overdrive/highway gear so the rpm wont drop. If thats the case it could also be electronic not telling the convertor to lock up. People are too fast to blame gears letting go and it wont happen over night or like turning off a light switch. My 02 GT with 3.29's turns less than 3k at 80mph.:) Mileage means nothing transmission filters and flushes do!! Ive replaced 2 transmissions and Owned 3 97-03 bodystyle GPs. Heat #1 then not doing filter and fluid changes are what kills these. Esp if its not modded and making some good HP.

Ive read an article saying that sometimes the PCS- pressure control solenoid and also pass-thru connector. could that also be the problem, and the car is not modded, at least not to my knowing. could it be? should i start with a trannyt flush and check the filter? thanks again

If your torque isnt locking up its easy to check drive the car on the highway and keep your right foot on the gas and then tap the brakes with your left the rpm should jump up as soon as you hit the brake disengaging the convertor. Id take it to a shop and have them put it on a scanner and take it for a drive. Dont let them drive they can sit in the passenger seat. I always reccomend the owner driving because you know exaclty whats going on under your driving style. Besides if they want your business if something is actually wrong they will be fine with it. Also if things check out fine after getting it scanned then change the filter and fluid. Makes no sense to if the trans needs to be pulled and fixed 1st. With each fluid and filter change I use a bottle of ATF addative forget who makes it its at oreillys comes in a red bottle with a black and grey label. Its a heat protectant. And I also always use synthetic fluid and a bottle of lucas trans additive. Filter and fluid change every 60k miles.

Ok here is a really easy way to tell if its 4th gear. When your driving on the highway pull the selector back into 3rd gear. If you feel and see it down shift then its not locking up. If you see nothing change then you've lost 4th gear. BTW, yes 4th gear can go out without anything else being wrong. The splines on the shaft are extremely weak and go out without any warning most of the time. Its extremely common.

by driving and taping the brakes will that let the tranny switch gears, if thats what your sayin? My buddy has a shop and been going to there for awhile now and i trust him. so maybe just the fluids need to be swapped out? i hope soo cant afford anything else, i hjust bought the car and have to replace the oil pan since its rusted through!

What you said will eleminate it not locking up in 4th but it can lock up in 3rd too and if you do what I said you will know if the computer is telling it to lock up in the 1st place!! Obviously if its not telling it to lock up it likely wont in any gear. No your method isnt a short cut and still that problem wont come about like turning on and off a light switch. A torque spike like tires spinning on wet pavement then catching dry pavement will spike the load on the trans and maybe cause problems. Splines simply wont fall off.:)

NO! just drive the car at cruising speed and keep your foot on the gas and hit the brake with your left. The rpm should jump and the car SHOULD stay in whatever gear. It should NOT down shift. As for what the other guy said yes you could also down shift and put it into 3rd and see if the rpm jumps if not I bet your not getting 4th gear which is over drive at all!!

I doubt 4th just let go like that

Then you don't know these cars very well. The pre-03 4T65E has a very, very common problem where the splines on the 4th clutch hub wear away. This causes the trans not to be able to shift into 4th. Torque converter not locking up won't cause near the increase in RPM that he's seeing. Couple hundred RPM cruising would be the most.

you are a tard ive owned 3 of these damn things and replaced 2 transmissions each had different symptoms and problems. The rpm gap I can maybe agree with. Explain to me how anything mechanical will simply stop with out any other factors NOT changing. If their is a spline problem something would have caused them to go bad and other problems would be noticed too. If its not getting 4th gear It may not have anything to do with the spline at all but more like a piston not pushing the 4th gear set into place. The gear pistons commonly fail thats what happend with my last trans. No 4th gear loud whinning transmission and rpms all messed up because it was stuck in 3rd.

Or you can just count how many times your car shifts. 1-2 2-3 3-4 yours probally does 1-2 2-3 and thats it.
Agree it prolly doesnt have 4th at all what I was saying earlier was to eleminate the possiblity of the computer not tell the convertor to lock up.

When my PCS went, the car would surge and do hard shifts and slip... this doesn't sound like your problem.

ive done all of those tried shifting it back down to 3 and rpms just stayed there and counted as well and it just stays in 3rd.

I don't care how many you've owned, you obviously don't have a clue in this case. As for explaining how something mechanical will simply stop, the splines wear away over time and eventually give out. When this happens, the trans will no longer shift into 4th, and that's it. No other symptoms. This is why GM started heat treating them for the 2003 model year, the hardened splines don't wear away. This has come up more times than I can count over the years on the various wbody/bonneville boards that I'm on. Extremely, extremely common.

What "piston" are you even talking about? I can only guess you're talking about the accumulator piston? Not a very common failure at all on these transmissions. Pretty common problem on the 4L60 with the plastic pistons, but that's a totally different setup.

If you shifted back down to 3rd manually yes its not getting 4th gear/overdrive. I bet that clutch pistion is the problem not pushing the 4th gear pack in to place. Exactly what went wrong with my last one. No fluid and filter in the world will fix that.

clutch hub what you said is what I was talking about as the "piston" that pushes the 4th gear set into place. Not an accumulator piston. *****ing you dont care how many ive owned or I dont know/understand whats going on is where the Edick war will start. I didnt ever say hey Scimma you dont know WTF is going on trust me I do. Oh and yes I know the differences are between the 4t60E and 4t65E are. I owned a 95 GTP with the 4t60E and you can NOT replace the diff cover on them either like when I blew that all over the highway in highschool ****ing with an eclipse.

well either way it sounds like im screwed, so how can i save the tranny for a bit and figure out whats 100% wrong with i have to drive it on the highway?

Not very much Id manually leave it in 3rd and try not to rev the hell out of it. The rpm shouldnt hurt the engine but that trans will be history soon.
