Does my GP have a factory alarm?

The Grand Prix I bought had a Viper alarm installed. The previous owner disabled it because he said it kept going off. So I have to, horrors, unlock the door via the key. Scary, I know. Anyway, I never had issues with an earlier GM alarm and I don't have problems with my current alarm on the Impala. Is there a build code I can check on the trunk lid to see if it has an alarm? If it does, I have some older fobs from a previous Impala that I might be able to reuse. Or should I just get the Viper alarm turned back on? It is probably the LAST thing on my list of fixes that this car needs, so I'm not in a rush to get it done.

Yes there is a code on the trunk lid for the alram but i am not sure what it is. Your best bet is to go to the dealer and ask for an rpo code print out. What that is it takes the codes for the features your car has and breaks them down into a print out so you will know what your car has and doesnt have.

Thanks. I then went on to try something novel - do a google search on RPO codes. First result? The website RPO Codes.com- GM option codes,GM rpo codes,Regular Production Options,General Motors options gave me what I wanted:

AU0 : LOCK CONTROL, REMOTE ENTRY – KEYLESS ENTRY (DOMESTIC)
and
UA6 : THEFT DETERENT SYS

My car has both, which I guess means it has remote entry and a built in alarm. Not all the RPO codes were listed on the site, and some of them were wrong. It says the L36 engine is "427 CU. IN. ENGINE – 390HP.":D

I can still do it for the handful of codes that aren't listed, when I go ask for the cost of "reprogramming" the car with the factory system.

in my 97, the RKE (remote keyless entry) module sits behind the DIC, on top of the air duct:

and, in adition, my Service Parts ID label (lists alll the RPO codes on the car) points to AU0 (thats a zero) as the "Lock Control, Remote Entry)

your 2000 may be the same, though there are a few other RPO codes that could mean the same. if you wanted, you could take a pic of your SPID label (either on the underside of the trunk lid, or perhaps on the spare tire cover) and post it, we can decode the RPO codes for ya.

ha, I was editing my response while reviewing the codes from a picture I just took...:th_laugh-lol2:

you shouldnt have to have anything "reprogrammed"

if its anything like my car, the aftermarket alarm is totally independent of the factory system. if i use the factory fob's, then the factory alarm is activated, and locks the doors.

i would guess that you just need a fob, and program it (programming steps i think are even in the manual, if they're not, ive got them cataloged here somewhere)

what are the fobs from that you have? we can see if they're compatible...

the dealer is gonna charge you at least an hours labor just to learn them to the car, id guess

The fob I have is from my '00 Impala. I'm fairly confident that cars made in the same plant, same model year, will be OK. But I thought programming them the first time required that you at least have one. I don't have anything other than the aftermarket ones. I can take another look at the manual to confirm this, though.

the factory instructions do not say anything about having to have one of the original remotes... not for these cars, anyway.....

  • Once the Keyless Entry Receiver enters the programming/diagnostic mode, the programming of the first transmitter erases all previous transmitter programming information, requiring the programming of all transmitters.
  • Program only one vehicle Keyless Entry Receiver at a time. If multiple receivers are being programmed in close proximity simultaneously, it is possible that the same transmitter could be programmed to more than one keyless entry receiver.
To program the Important (RKE) Transmitter, use the following procedure:

  1. Pull the MALL PGM Fuse.
  2. Turn the Ignition Switch to "ACCESSORY."
  3. Turn the Ignition Switch "LOCK" and then to "ACCESSORY" within 1 second . At this point you should be in the Body Control Module (BCM) diagnostics.
  4. Open and close any door. You should hear a chime if you are in the diagnostic mode. If a chime is not heard, try to reenter diagnostics by starting this procedure over with step #1. Press and hold the "LOCK" and "UNLOCK" buttons simultaneously on the RKE Transmitter for 14 seconds . At the 7 second mark you may hear a chime. Continue holding the "LOCK" and "UNLOCK" buttons on the RKE Transmitter until you hear a chime around the 14 second mark.
  5. Repeat step #5 for the rest of the transmitters (up to 4).
  6. Exit BCM diagnostics by turning the Ignition Switch to the LOCK position and placing the MALL PGM Fuse back into the Fuse Block. The RKE Transmitter should be programmed at this time.

The directions you quoted aren't in the manual. I'll give it a shot today with the one remaing remote. I believe it is in some way active, as a red light was flashing on the top center of the dashboard. I'll let you know the results if this works.

I just tried to program the two fobs and I was unsuccessful. Here's the possible reasons:

1. Car DOESN'T have remote entry/theft deterrent. (Unlikely, as RPO codes identifying it does are also on my Impala which I know has it.)
2. When the aftermarket alarm was installed it turned off/disabled the factory system. (Maybe, I can't say.)
3. The fobs I tried don't have the same FCC code, and thus won't work. (Possibly, but the model year the fobs came from and the model year of my GP are the same)

While in programming mode, I was able to program the light settings (on for a bit when entering and exiting) but nothing else worked. I couldn't program auto lock, as I would get 2 beeps every time I press up or down on the lock button. Is there fuse possibly that was yanked to disable fob use?

just get the viper alarm turned back on and checked over, I am 99.9% sure that the person who installed it did not tie into the door triggers correctly, or do it at all. If it is tied into the domelight that is why it had so many problems going off. I have to fix other best buy's installers mistakes on 3800 cars all the time. Our cars are very special cars and are actually easier to install on then most, but also very different than a lot of other ones out there.

That's what I'd prefer to do. Any idea what a shop will charge for turning it back on? I assume it won't take too much work, maybe an hour. Or at least that's all I hope it will take. It's the bottom of the list of things that I have to get fixed on the GP.

well best buy would just charge custom labor which is about 70 dollars per hour, however most of the time if they have a good car audio senior (like me, haha) we will discount that down around half that to gain return customers. I would get the door triggers put on right and have them reprogram it for you, as the alarm really doesn't get turned on just powered up and programmed.

Alarm/remote starts aren't super hard to install, but they are really in depth installs, it shouldn't take more than 2 hours for a decent installer to troubleshoot anything as the install itself is only 4 hours or less.

Darn, too bad I'm not close to IL. Via Viper's website, I found two places close to me. I called one and I just have to set up an "appointment" to bring it in. I didn't think it would take that long; I just don't want to go there and the person say, "yeah, this alarm is broken. You're gonna need a whole new system." If he does that, I'll just have him rip it out and I'll leave. I think that as long as I go in there and I'm friendly, it shouldn't be too painful.

well, there's one other scenario... that i just realized... this programming instruction that i posted is from my 97 service manual.... i wouldnt think it has changed, but not sure.

what are the GM part numbers on your fobs?

Busy weekend, slow reply. Entering programming mode was correct, but whether that's how to program fobs, I can't say. Here are the numbers on the back of my fobs.

GM/UTA 25678792
FCC ID: KOBUT1BT
CANADA: 1983 101 393

Same on both, naturally.

that's you problem right there.

those fobs dont match mine, both of which work on either my regal or my GP.

the number info on my fobs:

GM: 10246215
CANADA: 218 101 487
MODEL/FCC ID: ABO0204T

The model/fcc id is the important number... pick up one of those from ebay or ed morad (im sure he has handfulls of em)

the programing instructions should match, i had another member check the programming for their year that is newer than yours, so it's gonna be the same for you.

I thought it wouldn't matter, as the cars are the same year, and I thought the GPs and Imps were made in the same factory. But I noticed a stick on the GP that it was made in Missouri, and I know the Imps are made in Canada. I've seen them on eBay, so I'll give it a shot. Worst case, I put them back up on eBay and lose a couple bucks for a lesson learned.

I got two used fobs from Ed Morad today. I was able to program one; the other just wouldn't work. I tried swapping the rubber inserts with my Impala covers but that didn't work either. Hopefully Ed will send me another.

Anyway, I was having some problems programming the fobs for some of the lock and unlock options. The manual says to press the lock button and you should cycle through the different types of locking and the same wth the unlock. However, no matter how many times I press lock or unlock, I get one beep when I press and one when I let go, for two total. I could not change it. Is this because I have the coupe instead of the sedan? Or is there something else I need to do?
