Do my speakers suck or do I suck?

So I bought new Pioneer 3 Way TS-A6964R speakers for my rear deck. Taking out the stock speakers I found 4 clips. What I decided to do was connect 2 of the clips together at the speaker, so I could just clip it back into the existing wires.

The speakers work, but they sound like a bag of crap. The sound cracked. I brought them back to Best Buy and put the new ones back in, but they sound even worse. It's pretty awful. Any advice? Or am I just screwed?

I have an aftermarket head unit, the Pioneer DEH-P5000, and have only had small problems. It shuts off from time to time, and before I replaced the bad ballast, it would shut off whenever I turned on my HID's.

How experienced are you in hooking up speakers? did you have the best buy people put the other ones in? I've never been a fan of Pioneer, they all sound harsh and unbalanced IMO

Are you sure that you have the wires phased correctly, positive to positive and negative to negative

Do you have an AMP? Is it tuned correctly? check your wires, hooking up speakers isnt rocket science. And if it sounds THAT bad, check your EQ, its prolly all FUBARd

I'm pretty experienced with this stuff, although I haven't seen these plug things before. I was very careful to have them phased correctly.

It just sounds like a bag of d!ck.

And I do not have an amp, although would like one eventually. I've played with the eq quite a bit with No luck. None of presets sound good and anything I put in doesn't sound good.

Remove it from the car, get some speakers you know sound fine, hook it up to the rear outputs and play a CD, if it still doesn't sound good then your head unit sucks, if it doesn't sound bad, then you suck. A lot.
