Do It Yourself Spectre Intake with Pics

I decided to take pics and list the part numbers of everything I bought to put together my Spectre intake. It has been a few years since I had my last GTP and everyone just bought the intakes that were available for big money. I was happy to learn from you guys that putting your own together reaped mostly the same benefits at a fraction of the cost.

There are of course many ways to put this intake together but so far this seems to be working well for me. This is all installed on my 2005 CompG.

(1) 3/8 Double Barbed Splicer Part# A-290 - Lowes

(1) 1/4 Male 1/4 Female 90° Pipe Threaded Elbow Part# A-739 - Lowes

(1) 3/8 Barbed 1/4 Male Pipe Threaded Adapter Part# A-293 - Lowes

(1) 1' 3/8 Fuel Line - Advance Auto

Here you connect the double barbed fitting to the stock 90° PCV rubber elbow to the 3/8 fuel line.

I drilled and tapped the aluminum elbow to accept the brass fitting for the new PCV hose.

I used the industrial velcro and positioned the PCM here.

I know most of you guys can figure these things out for yoursleves but hopefully this will help someone out in the future.

You could also just bolt the cone right to the end of the MAF and not need anything else and save even more money.

But, nice write up.
 


Awesome. I have a 9" AEM cone filter due to arrive tomorrow for my weekend project, and this just took all the guesswork right out of it. Except I'll be using Home Depot couplers and pipe lol.

im a porting Nazi! so i have to ask... how far does that PCV adapter stick into the air stream? from my eye ball i figure 1/4" to 1/2" at a min. how about after you drill the hole in the elbow and use the threads to set the threads on it, you take it back out and use a saw to cut it down? so maybe only like 1/16" is past the elbow inner wall?
 
I'm planning to do something like this but hooking up the cone to the MAF like how Dread mentioned. However my father thinks getting rid out stock box setup is a bad idea. His rationale is that since the cone is open, I risk having more stuff and water getting into it and thus getting a check engine light. He always gives me the reason: "If you lived in Florida I can understand, but not here".

If I can give him a reason besides moar horsepower and getting to enjoy the whine I may be able to sway him. Getting the OK from my dad is a big deal when it comes to cars since he is the one that maintains them in our household.
 
getting enough water into the engine bay high enough to do anything would require a hose.

the motor ingests water all the time.
 


yes water would be over the bumper to reach the filter.... if it is that high... its your fault for driving thru the river and not the intakes fault.

tell dad the inlet for the stock air box is lower than the cone filter you want to put on, and you could get 1 mpg more. if you drive it nice. my car seems to run smoother with a open cone too.

driving though anything deeper than 6 inches of water you are asking for trouble anyways, the air filter would be my last worry.

Yes I was planning on cutting it down. It sticks into the intake maybe a 1/2 inch. I don't think it is a real restriction but I'm going to cut it down anyway.

I only used one single 3in coupler between manifold and MAF sensor, with a ring cut off it to be a spacer for the 4in cone. Drilled a hole in the coupler for PCV adapter and used a bit of copper pipe to keep it flush with the inside. The longest part was trying to figure out what to do with the PCM... (zip tied)

Obviously the SC is louder, but the real surprising part is the noticeable throttle response increase.
