my mom just got a 2000 grand prix gtp with the 3.8L supercharged in it and it says to use premium gas in it but does it really make a difference? i don't know much about these gm cars i'm more of an F-150 person so i figured i would ask on here. thanks

Nahhhh... not at all. Drive it to my house, we'll swap my n/a 3800 for her supercharged one, and she can use all of the 87 octane she pleases.

OP, you need premium fuel or predetonation will occur due to the forced induction. Premium fuel combats predetonation and without it people chip pistons and destroy motors.

yup if theres any type of boost involved i would run prem. and if you cant afford .30$ more i pitty you lmao

it's actually $0.20 more.. not .30 ;)

but seriously.. it amounts to just a few dollars more for a full tank.. not a huge impact. the annual rise and drop of gas prices have bigger impact.. i.e. $4 vs. $3. also use GasBuddy app.. you can find stations which offer premium fuel at the same price or even lower than other stations price their regular at.

(sorry, i know the thread is a bit old.. found via google)

Yes, definitely 93 or 94 octane, you may be able to get away with 91 if that's all you can find but I woulden't push it in hot weather.

$.35-50/c more for premium here still.

wow, really? I thought it was .20 everywhere.. (in the US). We don't have the cheapest gas here (pacific NW), but premium (92 octane) is pretty much always .20 more, and plus is .10 more at most stations.
