DIY Input shaft and chain?

Frosty

I Write E85 Stickies
So im sitting on a ticking time bomb here, 2.8" genv setup on a bone stock trans other then a shift kit (non hd 4t65e)

The trans has less then 5k on it so I would like to save it from certain death. I already plan on pulling the whole drivetrain this spring to do some gasket work but was hoping to upgrade the trans a bit as well. I looked at bills guide to doing the 4th shaft and that makes doing the chain not look so bad. I also know the hd diff upgrade isnt too hard either. How hard is it to do an input shaft at the same time as a chain? Anyone done it themselves? I don't wanna let the magic smoke out of the trans!

Not to mention its probably getting a turbo soonish.... twin charged is the plan just for shock value. Stock cam for the mpgggggssss

Trans has to come out for input shaft replacement. There's an oring on the converter side.

These transmissions are tougher than people give them credit for. I've been hitting my stocker with twice as much power as you make and she hasn't missed a beat.
To do all that work to the trans, it needs to come out of the car.

Yup, you need to pull it out of the car. Once the trans is out, it's really easy to pull out the input shaft and drive chain.

So like I said the whole drivetrain is coming out this spring for new gaskets and whatnot so having it out isnt an issue. so once the chain is off is there any tricks to getting the shaft out other then "There is an oring"? I might ask my junkyard buddy for a 4t65 to practice on.

Then why do I keep hearing about some oring on the torque converter side / needs to be out of the car? I keep getting the impression that it comes out converter side and not chain side?

No, it comes out of the chain side, but there is an oring on the convertor side that makes it very difficult to remove the input shaft with it in. Take the oring off the convertor side, and it comes out fairly easy.

Just as everyone has said. After the converter is out. There is the turbine shaft o-ring that has to be removed. After it is removed, the turbine (input) shaft comes out with the drive gear, chain and driven gear all at the same time. If you plan on replacing the shaft or overhauling the transmission there are 3 Teflon seals that will need to be replaced on the turbine shaft. Teflon seals have an installer that stretches them and a sizer that shrinks them to the right size.

So If I buy a zzp 300m shaft with new seals installed I should be able to slide it right in?

My 117k completely stock trans is still going strong with my setup. I am however starting to piece together upgrades for when it finally does go boom.

I don't know the size of it but if they say it fits with seals installed it will slide right in. If it is just the shaft you will need to put the gear on it which is held on with a snap ring. If you are confident enough to tear into the transmission it will be easy.
