Digital DIC Swap In?

After posting on the net looking for a digital dic to swap into my 2003 grand prix gt i got a reply from a guy saying this:

" 2003 Cars need 2003 SPECIFIC DIC's other wise they don't work (ask a friend of mine he's willing to pay a fortune for mine - it's installed and not for sale).

Sorry to tell you the bad news. They're a pain to find, you also need to specify GT or GTP, and I'm serious. There's only about 6000 GT ones in existence world wide best of luck and contact if you need more info/help. If you use any other year (99-02 are completely interchangable) then the only thing that will work is the oil reminder . . . if you're lucky. "

But before deciding to swap to a digital dic i researched the swap and found this:

http://www.grandprixforums.net/adding-hud-dic-your-97-03-gp-8171.html

...which states it can be done with little hassle. So can it actually be done or am i just wasting my time? Thanks! :)

I'm sorry for the old thread bump...but I've been up and down the net looking for a definitive answer on this as well. Some searches say one thing, others say another, with that said...can someone please confirm this? Or if there is a modified wiring schematic for the 03's that we have to do to make the regular digital dic (98-02) work. Thanks in advance.

I really dont see WHY there would be such a damn difference, The DIC Polls Data from the ECU via the OBD2 Port when installed in a NON DIC car. Nevertheless I could see if it was a GTP with a SC you would want the Boost gauge but i digress...

yeah its strange, but i rather know for sure because even though im willing to take apart the car, i shouldnt be experimenting with my dd.

I pulled mine for my 99 SE out of a 03 GT and its working fine for me. You can get one, Hook up the Ign and ACC wires to 12 V source and the ground, And hook up the signal wire to the OBD2 Signal wire and see if it gives you any info before even tearing into it.

Excellent. That's enough info for my attempt. Much thanks for the info. If I get it working, ill confirm it thru this thread.

Sorry I'm just getting back to this. I just completed the swap a couple of days ago. Just had no time to begin. Anyway, I don't know why some are saying that only 03 DIC's will work in 03 cars, not true (almost). Following the various guides on here and other sites, it was easy...and it works! The only thing is that I think its not accurate. It's showing I'm getting 13 mpg on the freeway with no traffic sometimes, or my range is like 150 miles for a full tank of gas sometimes. Possible something else maybe wrong so when I get some free time ill check it out.

I put in a gtp DIC from a 98-02into an 03 with no issues. It works fine. The only thing that I did not do was rewire the trac light to work for the GT as the light is always on when in a GT.

Select the AVG MPG on the display and then Press and hold the RESET for about 5 Seconds when cruising, Let it re aquire the average. It pulled some of the old data off of the ECU 13 MPG X 12 Gallon tank = 156 Miles.

Hmm, It would be neat if there was some way to connect the TPS readout to the Boost Gauge :) Not to act like you have a SC but to see the throttle level.

Cool ill try that. Thanks man! I'll report back later.

Re: Digital DIC Swap In?eeeeeeeee

Well any updates on the readout?

Tried to respond from my phone, caused the post to get messed up....anyway. Hey Brian. Thanks a lot for the tip! The first time I did it, same result. It was showing 13 mpg. Gave it a few days, did the reset again, it's showing my avg at 23 mpg. That's right around where it should be, but Im still gonna change out my upstream o2 sensor anyway. Hopefully it will get better.
