I'm not doing this anytime soon (won't be until I get my tax return), so I'm just doing a bit of research right now. My suspension is starting to clunk, and it's a bit bouncy, so I'm looking at doing my LCAs and shocks/struts next spring. My question is more about the struts - what is the difference between a Monroe quick strut and a Monroe econo-matic. Yes - I know one is the economy line (I'm dumb, but not THAT dumb)...I'm just wondering what the difference in ride quality is between the two. I'm considering going econos in the back, and quick struts in the front to save a bit of money (wife and 3 kids means that I don't do fun things to my car...just normal stuff...*sigh*).
 


I'm not sure of the difference, but if it's money you're trying to save, I assume you're buying it all online? The money you save online will more than cover the cost of buying the better struts.

There's also a Monroe vs kyb decision. I was going to use Monroe, but after reading a lot of reviews and opinions, I'm going to get kyb. It was pretty close to 50/50, but kyb had a bit more positive things to say about them.

We'll have to find someone who's used both struts from monroe to be sure, the item descriptions don't really say anything different about them. I bet the economy struts won't last as long.
 
Monroe's sux... I wouldn't waste my money on them on any of my vehicles!

KYB GR-2's are a good stock replacement strut, the Quick Strut version is the most cost effective way to change them. Fr a few bucks more you get the new strut, spring, strut mounts all in one. Just 5 bolts to loosen and whoola, a whole new ride : ). Otherwise you've got to compress the springs and will install the new strut to old mounts. It is ok to do this mind you, but to me, Quick Struts is way to go and simple to do yourself. Doing the control arms at same time is good idea as you mention.

...problem for me is the shin bone is connected to the knee... Meaning once I would do the struts, I'd do the control arms, the sways, front and rear, trailing arms, and strut tower braces, etc., as well. But for the money doing all that, it changed the ride from sloppy to pretty good for a two ton vehicle.

GR-2's are great for a budget strut. Try parts geek or ZZP for them. I've had mine for over 40k miles on vogtland springs, and I love them, however between this spring and my attempts at corner carving have made them ride kinda soft.
 
Get Gr2 from advance along with Monroe strut mounts and switch them over yourself and use a coupon code and save money.
 


you guys think replacing all of the suspension componente like struts, lca's, trailing arms is something a weekend warrior could do?

You guys are recommending the KYB's but the Monroe's have a buy 3 get 1 free. so $480.00 vs $320.00 is a big differnce..
 
You should be able to do all of that in your driveway. I think the hardest part of it would be disassembling the struts.
 


I have thw quick stuts on mine. Not a performance stut by any means, but I didn't notice much difference from stock (when not worn out). They are the higher end monroes fully assembled, not the econo crap. Can't be beat for the cost + time savings.
 
so who wants to come to chicago and do it for me... I'll have to take your word for it and give this a shot...

I hear what your saying about the monroe, but the car is 13 years old and want t fix the car but not spend to much more then I have to... plus ill do the quick struts


so who can help with a parts list. and I mean everything in the suspension. I assume I will need an alignment when all tis is done. I mentioned a year ago, My front sway bay is new. New beig 2 years now.. its the GMPP.. so will I need bushings?


I should also mention I have severe inner tire wear on the rear... front too..

Econo means it's not going to last. I'm tired of cheap parts that make it out of warranty then fail. I bought Monroe quick struts from amazon along with lower control arms, sway bar links, etc. Amazon was cheaper than any other site including promo codes at advance auto. Amazon also keeps a record of the sale forever and will warranty stuff that's out of warranty.
