I was just thinking about this. In 97 the dic's didn't have the tcs button. But if you swapped in a newer dic with the tcs button. Would you be able to make the tcs button work to turn the tcs off and on?
 


Nope wont work, the 97 cars used the same ABS system as the 96 and earlier w-body cars. The 98+ cars have ABS control module integral with the ABS manifold and it communicates directly with the pcm for operation under requiring condtions, where the 97 and older systems run on their own. The 97 GTP did not recieve the traction control because GM stated that the system wasnt up to the task to handle the L67 power output.

....(the GT's do) but i'll assume youre referring to the GTP....


the digital dic in my 97 GTP does have the switch on the circuit board, but no external button to activate it... i'm not really daring enough to push it. -- though it's likely that the programming isnt there for it... though maybe it could be.
 
The 97 GT / NA 3800 cars did get traction control and would have had the button, or at least some of them did because that engine was tolerable enough to control with the older ABS system, where the supercharged engine was claimed to make too much power for the old system to work with properly

while the car does have a "low traction" light, iirc, it's just measuring difference in wheel spin between the wheels. not an actual program to help control traction.
 
Its an actual program. I was hanging with a but with a 97 gtp at the local street races a while back. He was using his hpt to do something and showed me how it works and u could change tcs tables in it.
 


97s have ability to limit torque under certain conditions. Yes HPT shows these tables, but they are the same tables for all the years and labeled the same. There is torque biasing which basically looks at the different wheel speed between the two front wheels and if it seems them vary under heavy acceleration too much it will pull timing and lean the engine. This operation is NOT traction control and shouldnt be confused with it. In a 97 GTP you cant drive in the snow and expect traction control to save you when one tire is on ice, because it wont.
 
In Branson(the 1st year) Chris went under the hood and disconnected my TC, for the burnout contest. I have a 97 GTP. No TC button, but a TC dummy light. So, it has TC. Right?!
Nothing saves me when I'm on the ice!!!;) Just luck
 
Topping the line, the GTP edition (actually an option package) got a supercharged version of the 3.8-liter unit. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes were standard, as was traction control (but not with the supercharged engine). Also standard was a tire-pressure monitor.

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix: Few changes came this year, except that traction control now was available with the supercharged engine. Airbags were "depowered" to deploy with reduced force.
 
That is correct Lori, you dont actually have Traction Control, just torque limiting / abuse mode when the pcm sees excessive mis-match in wheel speed when the engine is under load and the pcm pulls timing and leans the engine out to cut power and prevent the tires from spinning, ONLY under a heavy load such as a burnout. Traction Control assists during slippery driving conditions such as snow and ice, the 97 supercharged models do not have this ability again because of the older ABS system and this
