Developed a blinking oil pressure guage.

Shortly before i got the new car i was still driving around in the 97 Grand Prix. It was shortly after i had had that whole upper/lower intake gasket replacement. I had taken the car to Big Als to have the oil changed because the guy that did the gaskets never got around to it. And of course since the people at Big Als didnt know about the recent gasket work they assumed because the filter came out with milk chocolate colored oil it was something more serious. After talking with you guys i felt assured that it was not serious and that it was the cause of water and moisture getting down into it .Well the car didnt die like Big Als was saying it was about too however what it has developed is a flickering(not steady on )oil pressure guage. This only starts after the cars been running a good bit(like 35 miles are so) and it only flickers when the car is stopped in drive.Soon as you hit the gas or drive steady no flicker. Anyway i took it to a pretty trustworthy shop to ask what could be causing this. The owner said basically three things could possibly be cause. Obviously its getting some pressure he said this is a symptom he sees alot in these older GMs and Prixs. He said it could be that the oil pump is not quite keeping up and could need replacing, he also said something about bearings being worn and generally you can drop the oil pan and replace those. He also suggested that it could be something as simply as the grade/thickness of the oil used(this sounded kinda reasonable to considering there may still be residual moisture mixed in because i havent done the recommended three oil changes to clear it out. Couldnt moisture or water or coolant thin the oil?) Anyway his recommendation about what to do about the oil pressure guage surprisingly was to do nothing at all. He said to basically drive the car til the engine finally gave out (and no he didnt quote engine replacement prices to me lol). His reasoning was based on the 214k miles on the engine and the price of doing the oil pump and bearing replacement probably wouldnt be worth it and also said that we could replace and still not get rid of the pressure light. He said the cost of doing the work would be nearly $600 or more and would still not quarantee the pressure guage issue goes away. He said engine replacement wouldnt be much more and that i should drive and take care of car til the engine goes. He also pointed out that the engine might probably run for years with the blinking light without dying. So whats your opinion? By the way if i go the route of just running the car without replacing is there a fuse or sensor i can pull to make the blinking light just not come on?

Also for you grammar and proper sentence/paragraph punctuation folks im sorry for my run on paragraph. I cant for the life of me figure out how to start a new paragraph on the computer. On a typewriter(WHATS THAT??! for you younger guys) usually if you hit tab it sends you down to a new line under what youve already written to start a new paragraph. Again sorry.

Try another oil change and see if it makes any difference. I've only once had a car that the oil light came on in and I shut it off right away and it was 4 qts low on oil. I for one wouldn't drive it like that though. You could hook up a oil pressure gauge if you want to see what the actual pressure is.

Well it's obviously making oil pressure if it's running fine and what not, the question is if it really is low. But if you think about it, it had a crap ton of sludge sloshing around in there and it could have damaged your oil pressure sensor. So it could just be reading wrong, especially since you say it flashes and isn't steady on.

First off its an oil pressure light not gauge haha, i didn't understand what you meant until like your last sentence. Leave it for now, and if its still doing it after your next change, then just take the light out.

Sorry about that HIPPO. I think i was saying GAUGE because if you have the HUD on yours it will read "check gauge" above the speed your going when the oil pressure light is flickering and only when its flickering. But someone tell me this will the oil consistancy not being thick enough cause pressure issues? Or on the other hand as BRANDON suggested could have messed up sensor some when work was done. Where exactly is the oil pressure sensor anyway?

yeah. i would replace the sensor before i start fretting about engine internals. the coolant mixed with oil may have messed with it.

Sounds like a plan. Hope this sensor is easier to get to then that Crankshaft Position Sensor(thats still needing replacing)

oh yeahhh! oil pressure sender is a piece of cake. its right there on the oil filter housing, remove passenger tire and put a wrench on it and viola. you don't even have to drain the oil so i have found, you only lose a little bit. you dont have to pull anything out of the way :)

Its cake homey....just remove the tire and there it is. Unplug the old one. Unscrew it and screw in the new one. This is an aftermarket one, but this is where it'll be

go get your self a oil pressure gauge and sensor and screw it into where the old sensor was, now you know your oil pressure all the time.

oh and i found that channel lock pliers work best for getting that old sensor off and back on, you can see it but wrenching its another story lol
