The split 60/40% back seat is backwards. The smaller section should be on the passenger side so when a long object is placed in the car and the back seat is down and the passenger seat is also down its still possable to have two ocupents in the back seat instead of just one. I discovered this issue when putting a area rug in the car and wanted to put part of it in the trunk and still have the baby seat in the middle and wife beside the baby in the back seat. That would not work because of how the back seat is set up.

yeah, especially with the front fold down, would want to put everything in pass side only.

I wonder if there is a way to switch them around?

There is only one bracket that would need to move, cut it out and weld it into place again.

The bracket would need to go above where the hook is for the center child seat on the passenger side.

So far I think its possible with a very fine cutting tool. What would be best way to do that?

Must have been designed by the same team of twenty engineers that designed the cup holders on the 97-03 GP.

i look at the seats when i was installing my sub..

as far as switching them goes, its possible, they are just bolted onto a rail for rotation.
however its the catches/release cord thats the issue, the release could be extended, its just aircraft cable. but the location of the catches would need to be drastically altered to make them work. I would say easier to alter where it clicks in on the back, Not on the seat itself.

Next time I've got the seats down ill take a few pics come up with some ideas. Id say it is possible, but not as easy as just switching them
 
maybe its not necessary to lock the seat back in position? unless it would flip open on its own while driving then that could be annoying
 
Unless the seats are "loose" They should fit tight and the latch shouldn't be necessary. That being said, if something is in the trunk and you slam on the brakes without the back seats being latched, don't complain when you get knocked out. Have you looked into swapping your back seats for some from another vehicle? Might be easier than all the fab work.

Its funny that you call it a design flaw, at one point it was seen as a design advantage, much like the 90* doors.
 
Am I the only one that thinks it would be nice to retain at least two seating locations instead of just one when transporting something really long inside the car? Solution, switch the narrow and wide seat backs around. Also if something slides from the trunk it should be stopped by the back of the front seats.
 


i would say you do need latches, its a given.. i do also say it would be better to have the skinny side on the side with the front fold down seat.

today is car day for me so ill at them and see what could be done

You're the only one. If you are getting something long the solution is to not have any passengers. ;)

Its not a flaw. Its as it was supposed to be designed. If you have a long object that has to go all the way to the front, that also happens to be a little wide then it needs to go on the passenger side because the driver should not be affected.
