• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

darn fan/blower.

Well my Blower has only worked on setting level 5 since i got the car..So i assumed the rely switch. Well today no settings work, nothing..no air flow at all coming out of the vents.

And of course it happened today, we are in the middle of a blizzard already at 14 inchs of snow, and the next few days will be temps below 0*
So the timing of this is epic, as it nearly renders the car useless since I can’t see out windows.

The DRL are working fine, And I eyeballed the fuses they looked good but I have no tool to check them : /

What are some things I can look at? Or try, lets keep in mind is blowing snow and I’m up to my knees in it lol
had no time to get it.

The resistor is junk. Get a new one they are like $30.

Are these readily avaiable at auto stores? or is this a part that would need to be speical ordered do you think?

Also I dont know why, but now % does work....But from time to time wont...

If i let the car sit for awhile it works great, but if i turn it off...to say run into the store, and come back out and start the car, it wont work again.:(

So whats the best computer diagnoses here, it sounds like resistor but I want to be sure before I drop time and money..I have heard a few things here, ignition, resistor ect…
I lost all 4 speeds, and was only left with 5….speed 5 worked for awhile, but has now quit. Some people have said it could also be the ignition, but form my other standing if it was the ignition thing, other symptoms such as lights issue dtr issue would also be present.
People who describe a restior going bad sounds more like my issue.
Losing all 4 first….then later losing 5..
I know I’m restating this, but again, I just want to be as sure as I can be before i start…..its gonna be 4 below zero tomorrow. I need as much confidence as I can get. :th_laugh-lol3:

Your snow is headed this way. Thanks, but it’s the resistor. The 97-03 cars come with a water leak underneath the passenger side windshield cowling. There is a GM part to install to divert the water form dropping into your blower motor. When it warms up go after that. For now, the blower motor and resistor is an absolute B**** to get to. Plan on spending some time on your back, passenger side under the glove box and up next to the firewall. The blower motor is first. You will find 3 small bolts. The motor should drop you will find the two electrical wires on the side of the motor. Disconnect the factory connection. (you will probably have to cut the connector off depending on where you get your resistor from.) Follow the two wires, and you are now holding the resistor. Again, 3 screws. Two you will be able to see and get to. The third is against the firewall and on the backside of the resistor. You will only be able to feel this screw. (You likely will not be able to get this one back in later, so don’t worry if when you finally remove this last screw if you choose to throw it as far as you can into the snow.

I would purchase both the resistor and a new blower motor with the intention of returning the motor.

Hook the new resistor up. You can now loosely connect it to your old blower. Turn your ignition on, turn on the fan and see if it works. If it doesn’t, hook up the new motor and try again.

Good luck. You may be able to find a diagram of all of this on Autozone’s website. Under repair info.

do NOT buy a new blower motor whatever you do. it's definitely either the resistor or ignition switch.

see if you have power to your resistor as 01GTP said.
if you have no resistance, there can't be power.

resistor is a common problem on these cars.
the resistor is what controls the different speeds of the blower motor, and a worn resistor can cause the blower motor to work on a limited number of settings, or even not at all.
i am not familiar with the resistor being ties into the daytime running lights, when my resistor went i had no problem with my DRL's at all, i threw in a new resistor and off i went. they're around 30-40 bucks.

No... the resistor is a common problem on ALL GMs... trust the parts guy that sells them regularly. Its probably the restistor, but when you do get to it, use a flashlight and check the connector as well. More often than not I have to sell a new connector and ANOTHER resistor to people that didn't check it when it was the connector that melted and shorted out the first one. Between the leads the thin plastic melts and it arcs between them and bam, blown resistor, but the connector "looks" ok at a glance, check it with a fine toothed comb just to make sure its in good working order, then replace the resitor :th_thumbsup-wink:
