Custom Poly Trans mounts done Updated 3/7/13

Found a deal on some poly in the 95A range figured why not, im not forking out 90 for one so similar in dimensions to the stock one. so long story short i cut drilled and did my own version which is about 30%longer and wider to give the trans side more stability plus its sits slightly higher so no more sag on the trans side, using my angle finder its damn near 0.0 degrees before it was almost 1.5 which wont kill anything but it will cause some binding when trying to launch etc... so heres the pics and im considering making a run to make solid poly front mounts but more able to control the motor from twising upwards. ill start a thread when that comes. anyways here is my obese trans mount. If you have any question or considering making your own PM me or ask here thanks for looking

as for installation very simple if you have two jacks which i recomend and a jackstand youll also want to disconnect the dogbone up top. when you jack up the transmision via the jack also place a jack under the ball joint and jack up the control army so your CV axle boot dosent seperate or cause damage the joints themselves. all bolts involved are 15mm

Re: Custom Poly Trans mounts done

thanks for the comments and i scored a deal on for 350shipped because they were cracked then ZZP exchanged them for free including shipping.

How did you secure the bolts in there? I take it that they are floating but are they bolted through a piece of metal inside the mount?

Bolts both go half way through the mount I melted the shavings with gorilla glue and poured into the holes and threaded the bolts through it. This was a SOLID block of 95a poly when I got it

Re: Custom Poly Trans mounts done

and just where does one find blocks of polly? thats a cool looking mount.

id think a drilled hole and a sleeve in it for a threaded rod, then fat washers and just bolt it from both sides would be rock solid. never have to worry about the studs pulling out. that maybe to tight tho.

At first I was thinking it was threaded rod.... the sleeve would stop the threads from eating the poly from movement and causing play. would just drilling the hole smaller and threading the rod thru without the sleeve cause problems down the road?

Ingenious 91!!

That would be ideal and I would've just ran bolts straight through however their slightly offset on the top side and by slightly I mean half a bolt over so close. So I will slot the top bracket a little with a dremel and run it straight through next time with a sleeve for good measure. But this was a great project this block of 95a wasn't much I'm going to see if I can get more if I can I'll chop it myself and sell it for a decent price but it would be on you guys to slot your transmission mount

Re: Custom Poly Trans mounts done

I would think that if you just used threaded rod somehow, there would be alot less movement than even 95a poly.

Re: Custom Poly Trans mounts done

Truth^^

Now you've weakened the block of poly by drilling through it...I'm sure it didn't make that much of a difference though...

A Monte Carlo guy or '04+ 3800 guy posted a how to quite awhile ago on this...it's floating around here somewhere...

Here is the old school way I used to do mine: How to Make Fill Your Engine Mounts With Window Weld - Solid Mounts

Can't agree about making a solid block of 95a weaker And my lower mounts are filled with window weld I drilled them to get the hydraulic fluid out and pumped them full of poly till I can have new ones fabbed

UPDATE***
I decided to go for running bolts all the way through i was prepared to ream the upper cast piece a couple mm but turned out i didnt have to the bolts lined up perfectly so i drilled out the old holes and installed a metal sleeve for the bolt to go through and put it all together again. Im a little worried that the car dosent vibrate or anything its dead smooth with the mount. which seems opposite the expectation for 95A poly. but anyway here are some more pics of my work

thats got to be tight now.

did the other one get the studs pulled out? that was my only concern with the first mount.
