Custom Air Intake

Hey all

So I'm working on installing an air intake system on my 3.1L and I've been going back and forth with prices and custom deals (DIY) and have come to the conclusion through much forum-surfing that it would be cheaper and just as effective to buy my own pipe for cheap and put more money into a good filter.

My question is, what size pipe should I get for the 3100 throttle body? Assuming that pipe size varies by model.

Also, please hit me with any counter-suggestions as to what I should do.

I guess my primary question is, what should I do to put this together?
Buy the pipe and filter and make it work?
or look for a better solution (something made-to-fit factory)?

Thanks,

Gogginsii

Gogginsii,

What I'd do...is get a 3" coupler to run from the TB to the MAF...then bolt the aftermarket cone filter to the end of the MAF sensor.

These cars don't seem to really gain much from intakes, dyno proven. More so sound...if I were you I'd save my money for a bigger throttle body and a 3400/3500 top end swap if you want to get some power out of it...as well as ported manifolds and a larger downpipe...if you want to change the exhaust sound...get a different muffler...as the factory catback flows pretty decent.

+1 and milzy has a 56mm TB for $20.00, well worth it IMHO... i saw more pep/responsiveness when i did my intake+TB! everyone seems to recommend a downpipe, i haven't done it yet because i havent decided whether to just drop in a new dp from flange to flange or just get rid of the u-bend... you see my car has a "condition":th_sick2: many people know of it as CARB

The throttle lets more air through, sooner.

Gives the impression of increased throttle response.

I'd save the $20 for the intake or a downpipe.

blues right on the intake, i just did mine alittle different, ill post pics in a min
the tb the milzy has for 35 bucks is the stock tb off a 3400 its 4mm bigger then the stock one and evryone says its a good upgrade, ive ordered one too but there taking forever to ship it to me,
i just got a new dp put on with a u bend delete, havent even cranked the car up yet so couldnt say much about it, post pics soon

ok heres my intake im going to make it an fwi in due time

What intake setup/brand/specs did you use? I went to Advance the other day and found a plethora of metal pipes (not plastic?), but i'm still working on how exactly i should set up my system. would it be beneficial to bend it downward toward the fender at all? (in the spot where the stock box currently is).

I'm basically looking for a money-conscious option. although i'm not afraid to shell out for a better filter (k&n i had in mind)

Thanks a lot guys

K&N's suck.

Get a Spectre filter from Autozone.

Get a 3" In/Out silicone coupler for the TB-MAF...then get another 3" coupler to bolt to the other end of the MAF and go buy a long piece of PVC pipe from your local hardware store...paint it whatever color you want or leave it white since that is the color of your car...and toss the filter on the end of it.

weapon r air intakes makes one for a 3.1L. it cost me i think like $125. i really like it it has a bite to it when u rev it. try looking at that than makeing your own

Don't buy the pipes from Autozone. They are of a small diameter.

Just buy a filter from there, and go get some PVC pipe.

No...sir.

I'd never spend $125 on ANY WBody intake...as the Lowe's Plumbing Racing Intake makes as much if not more power than your Weapon R.

I've heard plenty of complaints from Weapon R as it is...not just from WBody's either.

i never had any problems from my WR intake. it sounds alot better and i like it better than my friends grand prix with a homemade one. but i guess everyone has there own view on stuff.

How does it "sound better"?

Any intake sounds the lame...closer to the TB...most of the time...the louder it is...that's it.
