Creamy stuff inside oil cap, please help

Been smelling burning oil for about a week now; never really had a chance to look at it, but I was assuming maybe I need to replace the valve cover gaskets; my car has 78k on it. Today I check my oil dipstick, and it reads full and nothing looks unusual. When I take my oil cap off, there is a white creamy substance on the inside of it and also on the filler neck too. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

you drive short distances don't you. That is caused by condensation usually, but a bad head gasket can also cause it.
 
The stuff on the oil cap is not really something to be concerned with for the most part. All that is is moisture that has gotten whipped up with oil vapors and then deposits on your oil cap like that.

What is your driving habits like? Do you do a lot of highway or city driving or a mix of both. If a mix of both, how much of each? Does it look the same when you look in the oil fill hole? In other words, is that same stuff on your rockers, the ones you can see through the oil fill hole?

With regards to the burning oil, probably a good bet that one if not both of the valve cover gaskets need to be replaced.
 
Actually, I used to drive a lot when I went to school, but now since I am not currently attending , I usually just drive to work and back which is right down the street from me. Plus, everywhere I need to go is close to me so..Oh and the rockers look fine, no stuff on them that I can see.

sounds like your engine doesnt really get warm enough to evaporate the water vapors, hence the white stuffs
 


Either your engine doesn't get hot enough to burn off the condensation inside the engine...or your LIM gaskets are going bad.

I would vote for the second one. And while you are doing it, change your valve cover gaskets that are probably leaking as well.
 
Nah, I dont, at this point, think its the LIM gaskets. Mine were leaking for a year or so and I never saw anything like that, but I do drive a fair amount on the highway too. I would think if your LIM gaskets were leaking THAT bad that you would see a milky color to the motor oil too when you checked the dipstick.

I highly HIGHLY recommend you get that car on a 10 - 15 mile continuous trip once or twice a week, it will do your car wonders and help the oil by evaporating any fuel and moisture contamination.

Seeing as he just replaced the LIM gaskets, I don't think it is those either. But he didn't mention that at first. But when my GTPs and my wife's malibu LIM gaskets were going, I would get this under the oil cap. And I drive 100 miles a day. Afterwards, gone. So the little bit of coolant getting in the oil might not be enough to make it turn milky, but would make this sludge under the oil cap.

You're right Zef and Im sorry if I came across as calling you out or saying you were wrong. I should have worded that differently. It didnt occur to me at the time writing it that it sounded the way it does. I hear myself saying the words in my head and the tone and inflections, but of course that doesnt come across in typing.

Thats okay. No harm done. I don't get upset too easily....especially when I'm right. ;)
