crank position sensor?

after my rocker install on my 97 grand prix gtp i reassembled everything and it started up then dropped all the rpms. so i talked to reptile and he told me he thinks its crank position sensor because it wouldnt start back up but it sounds like it wants to and it keeps cranking but when i charged the battery thinking low voltage i started it and heard what i think was a backfire noise and smoke came out of the throttle body. so i was thinking okay has to be CPS but then i check for spark and i get spark but it doesnt look very bright like its fading power. symptoms of cps is no spark and not restarting well i have spark, so what could it be? i want to get me car back up and running.

any help would be very appreciated
 




well if its sparking... it seems fine but no if reptile comes up friday then hes bringing his other icm to test it
 


Try disconencting you battery to reset the computer....probably wont help but its worth a try.

Honestly though...you probably are lookin at a crank sensor.
 
think so? well im kinda of hoping it is because its a relatively cheap fix. but well see. i did have the battery out for about an hr and no luck
 
I do think so...my car stalled a couple times...didn't wanna start sometimes blah blah.....new crank sensor and its ran fine ever since....knock on wood.
 


lol well thats what im thinking because my aeroforce gauge said i was running -25* of timing at idle! WTF so im thinking it has to be a bad sensor
 
fuxk hardly i was so horried that the timing chain skipped a tooth or something idk what to think>? but at WOT at the top of 2nd gear was -4* so im thinking bad sensor ftl?
