Core Charge?

Why in the heck do all of these mods for this car state something to the effect of a "Core Charge"... What the hell is that? Im just a dumb ol' mustang guy..... we dont have core charges... some examples are the PCM V1.0 "Refundable Core" and a Power Log, which Im guessing is also called a "plog" it has a "Core Charge" WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN BASIL!?!?!?!?!?

Couple a reasons really.
For example the pmc.
They end up recieving your stock pcm core back and they proceed to flash it with upgrated most requested and sought features.
Then they resell it.
With the proper software, you can tune you'r stock pcm.
Same with stock blower,heads,transmission, and other things.:th_tongue2:
They end up modifing them to perf specs and they resell them.
Porly the most thought out reason for them is cost effective.
They don't have to go out and search for core's to work on.
 
A core is basically one of two things...its when you pay the company the extra monies so they can replace what they sold (they refund the monies when you send in your part). or you send the part in first and they send you the new one.
 
What they said..in my own words.

Core charge is where you pay for a certain part upfront with the price of the service done to that part, be it a PCM program, a transmission build, or even powder coating, polishing, or plating services. You then get a core refund (usually in full) when you supply the original stock part back to the company or person you originally did the transaction through. This way, it will insure the seller will either have enough money to buy a replacement part if you don't send your core back in ever.

Some people like to keep their old original parts in case their car is under warranty and they have to sometimes go back to the dealership for service, they see mods done, poof, your warranty is now voided.

Or...

They feel for some stupid reason their car is going to be a collector car, and having all the old original parts will some way increase its value down the road.

Or...

They don't plan on keeping their car for ever, and what mods they do, they will want to remove before they sell it or trade it in to return it back to stock...the best they can. We call this a de-mod.

This more than just modding, too. Parts stores have core charges for things like rebuilt calipers and such. It's what you're paying for the starting piece (like, the caliper), and then you pay for their services done to that piece (like, rebuilding the caliper).

Oh, and the Plog has no core because it's made from scratch. If you see core charge for that, they might be talking about for a ported rear manifold which does have a core.
 
just in case you or anyone else reading this really doesnt understand how the price of the core works.
ok lets say you buy a part that list for 135.00 and a 35.00 core charge. if you dont have a core the price will be 170.00 plus any tax your state has. if you have the option to bring or mail a core back later you will then get the 35.00 back, less taxes.
I am not trying to insult anyone but I had a gentleman come into the store to buy a battery and got really mad b/c I had to charge him for the core.
