Coolant leak?

I recently acquired a 2000 GP GTP. The engine has about 15k miles on it... the second-prior owner to me didn't take very good care of the engine, so the owner prior to me had to replace it with a new one from GM. It's been babied since then, oil changes probably twice as often as need be, only premium fuel, etc.

I had the car on the lift on Tuesday to replace the passenger front lower control arm bushing, so I figured I'd take a peek at the motor and check things out. I know there's an oil leak, but I'm not so concerned about that at the moment. I don't think I have ever driven a car that hasn't had an oil leak. :P

I've noticed before that when I start driving (usually before the car is completely to temp), coolant will leak somewhere in the engine and steam off. It's quite a (scary) sight in the middle of winter when there's this billowing mentholy-smelling cloud coming out from under the hood.

The oil isn't milky or anything and the coolant is clean. The leak isn't very fast--the coolant is a little bit low, but it hasn't been topped off in a few months.

The leak appears to be on the drivers side of the engine somewhere, but I can't locate exactly where it is. Anyone have any ideas?

check the lower intake manifold. Look where the manifold seats to the heads on front and back and where it mates to the block under the throttle body. your lower intake manifolds gaskets could be shot. just my .02.

Considering the motor is only a year old--GM wouldn't have used the new gaskets? Interesting.

So the gasket is on the drivers' side, then? I've done some more basic work on cars before, but never anything with the motor. Is there a way to replace this without pulling the whole thing out?

I have no clue if they would have or not. Theres a gasket that sandwichs between the head and LIM. then theres a seal on each side of the block that sits under the LIM

check the heater hoses. mine just had a pinhole leak in it the other day and was leaking right on my headers causin it to steam like a mofo.
