Cooking Subwoofers

I'm still having problems, I remember now that the car I previously had the amp installed in may have been clipping the amp. It was a Kia spectra with a small 1.8l 4 banger, I remember it used to drain the battery and stuff. Theirs no over heating in the amp but I've shut it down a few times so my sub doesn't fry (it smokes). Would I even be able to tell if the amp is finished, if it's been previously clipped?

Yeah, it wouldnt work. If you clip an amp to death, it basically overheats and burns up some components inside the amp. Im sure your amp is fine, those alpine amps were pretty stout. You just need a beefier woofer for that amplifier.

That HU puts out 2.5V to its sub pre-outs.

it also says I also have x2 pre-outs @ 2.5 volts... does that mean I can buy separate amps for the speakers and subs? A single channel and a x4 channel vs. buying a x5 channel amp. It’s a little more to buy separate amps but from what I see the specs are better performance wise if I do it that way.

For sure clipping, you need to set your gains with a dmm :-) or do the ghetto way, by ear, turn the gain all the way down, and slowly turn it up till it does not get any louder, then back off just a tad. If the sub was literally smoking it is more than likley done. With that amp buy a type r 12. I have 2 12in type r on 1700 rms, and they are rated at 500 each.

me and Keithgtp03 have already figured out its an amp gain setting but that being said The 12" I originally installed seized and the 10" was close to, it was smoking but it pounds just as hard as when I had it out the box, at the right setting its great. It doesn't shake the ground but that's not what I'm looking for lol singles and triples are good for that
