Conventional or Synthetic Oil

You already know what this is about! My car has 171k miles on it. There are no leaks anywhere in the engine, so I was considering switching the car over to synthetic. As far as I know the car has always taken conventional. Just not sure if I should or not. Any input would be great! Thanks!
 


The change is 100% up to you.

Do you want to spend more on oil and change it every 5,000 miles or spend less on oil and change it every 3,000 miles.

Oil is oil, there is nothing to gain or lose from switching.
 
I suppose! I guess we'll see, I still have about 700 miles til an oil change is necessary. I have just always heard that synthetic is supposed to help with engine life?
 
I prefer synthetic because it seems to come out cleaner at the end of the oil change. That's just based on my experiances.
 


I laugh when I hear oil commercials say that "their" brand of oil makes the cars engine wear less and run longer.

Clean oil of any brand will keep any motor healthly.

Use what has worked this long. Regular oil just stick to one brand that is trusted. That is my advise.

On a side note, I know guys are using 5w-40 and running the bigger Blazer filter. Keep in mind your motor mount can not be bad as it would hit.

This. Now stop the oil threads. Guys put to much thought into something that shouldn't require much thought geez.
 


Not much difference but synthetic is better and no nothing to do just switch.

I think people that run their cars harder just like to assume that synthetic protects better. Find an oil that hasn't let you down and stick with it.
 
I would stick with conventional oil. I have an Astro van with 273,000 miles on it and it only had conventional oil.
 
Switching to synthetic on a high mileage vehicle that has had conventional oil all it's life, can lead to some issues, namely the fact that synthetic oil have strong detergents that can clean engine oil seals and remove accumulated buildup of residue and cause the seals to leak. I have encountered just this scenario when I switched to synthetic in my 2000 Blazer. The synthetic oil will not hurt a thing, just be prepared to see a little bit of oul from front and/or rear main seals, it is not bad, it is not going to hurt anything, just be prepared.
 
I agree with oil just being oil. Any oil changed regularly will have good results. Only info I have received from other modders is if you decide to go to a FULL synthetic, don't change back to conventional as this could be bad. Not sure why, but just advice I have gotten.
 


How has had there engine fail because viscosity break down of oil?

Interesting note, my wife's minivan has lifetime drivetrain warranty and they don't care which type of oil as long as you change it when the computer says.

I run conventional!
