Computer crashing while writing PCM

This happened twice now. While using DHP and writing a PCM on a 2004 Grand Prix GT about 3/4 thru the PCM write the laptop computer goes to the "blue screen of death". This has "bricked" two PCMs now. I'm too scarred to use it anymore has anyone dealt with this?

PCM would not reboot, and car was dead.

Thanks.

When I wrote a couple 04-05 gtp's, I had to pull the radio fuse since it was on the same circuit as the obd2 port. Are you trying a full write or partial?

I had a incomplete once with hpt, i used my bench harness to reflash and i was all set. Having a aftermarket radio will mess up communications, pulling my radio fuse lets me use "high speed" without it fails into low.

i had this issue myself, turned out to be the lap top i was using. got a new used 50 dollar laptop and works fine. it came with vista, that worked fine till the pc crashed, not dhp related, loaded win 7 on it been fine since.

if your on a older OS, maybe you can upgrade it if your system is able to.

and the other tip is when the pc does crash do not turn the key off, leave the key to run till you re boot the lap top and try again. if you keep the power to the pcm it should be ok. dhp will know it didnt finish, ask if you'd like to retry the last file.

having a battery charger on the battery can also help if your battery is weak.

being your a 04 a off board is a good idea. much safer.

you also need to pull the radio fuse when reading or writing to the pcm on 04-05 cars.

It doesn't sound like it's any issues with the car, if the laptop is getting a blue screen, it's probably the laptop. Memory is crashed, or the program is corrupt.

Can modify no problem out of the car, going to pull the radio fuse next time and hope it works. Computer reboots just fine. Ran all my utility programs to check computer before it stopped, the second time.

thanks for the helpful responses

I always have this problem when I run the keyspan usb to serial, now i uae a different usb to serial cable or else blue screen of death happens even on a brand new laptop! Screw that "cat" model keyspan thing, i never had that problem with the original one that i got with my DHP that actuallh said keyspan on it.

I had an issue once when I was doing a write, something happened when the bin was loading with hp tuner, and the software got stuck in loading mode, wouldn't ever finish. I ended up turning the car off, having it towed home and then I unhooked the battery 15 minutes, after I hooked the battery up and tried to load the software it took the tune just fine. I attribute the whole thing to a glitch between my laptop and the hp tuner software.

I had issues in the beginning with my impala, hpt would freeze up, had to use my spare pcm for a few days. then when I put the original pcm back in it worked no problem and had only a had one hiccup since.
