Common Grand Prix problems?

Hello,

I am new to this forum but wish I had found it about two weeks ago. My LIM needed to be replaced and I didn't really have much idea what it would have taken to replace it, so I paid a shop $450 to do it, along with flush and fill the coolant and replace the oil & use oil system cleaner. After reading this site for a few days, I think I would have tackled it myself.

What I also found reading on here is that the LIM is a common failure in Grand Prix's. Another part I need to replace (or perhaps clean?) is the MAF sensor (I will do that myself) which also seems to be common. A third one, which I have not had a problem with yet, is the plastic coolant elbows on the water pump. I am wondering what other parts I should keep an eye on because they are notorious for failure.

Also, I would like a good repair manual for this car, are the dealer manuals the best? The Haynes / Chilton manuals appear to not cover the SC engines.

I drive a stock '02 GTP.

Leaking valve covers. (under recent recall)
Wheel bearing sensor's going out (causing the ABS and TracOff lights comming on)
General gasket's leaking such as oil pan (normally experienced in all cars)

Generally there good car's and if they have been upkept well ou won't have many issues.

blower motor resistors
heads up display dimming
transmission issues

LIM gaskets are common on all 3100,3400,and 3800 motors, but on the NA 3800 the plastic plenum can fail under heat too

also the plastic fuel lines over will time will eventually leak and possibly burn

haynes and chilton cover all the engines but they suck at doing because they made one book for multiple vehicles, either get ALLDATA or GM service manuals

Another one I forgot that I have since dealt with. The key release solenoid started acting up in my car where it would not release the key from the ignition. Every once in a while at first, and then pretty regularly after that. It was a pain to shove a screwdriver in the hole every time. I ended up using a 10-24 screw in the "screwdriver hole", a couple of nuts and washers until I got the right height, and it keeps the plunger pushed up. No problems since, but I guess someone could take the key out when the car is driving down the road, but since I am not Bo Duke and don't live in Hazzard County, I don't worry about that happening. :th_winking:
