common GP problems (what to expect)

as a knew owner of an old GP (2000 GTP) , i'd like to know what to expect from the car as far as problems or quirks go.
so far during my research both here and other sites i've found they leak water into the dash , eat up hub assemblies , and it's common to have have ignition switch problems.
is there anything else i should be on the look out for ? any preventive maintenance i should do to head off potential future problems ?

wait till it breaks, then fix as needed. how most of use roll. parts are not always cheap enough to just be tossing them on for no reason.

gotcha, i'm just saying things like the leaking cowel that you informed me about. i'd have never known and had the previous owner known i may not have a few of the problems i have like the heater. but now that i know , i can prevent potentially ruining more heater parts.

well theres a few things, like that cowl, and a lim gasket replacement. other then that keeping up with regular maintenance and you'll be fine.

first thing i do when i get a new used car is a full tune up, oil change, check the fluids, check the brakes.

same here , i've already did all the fluid and filter changes except power steering , and new brakes and rotors all the way around. i bought new plugs and wires , the plug wires look like they were just put on recently so i'm gonna hold off on those awhile. all new brake lines and soon new fuel lines.

now to just wait for stuff to fail.

my trans went out, p/s pump. w/p, alt. pulleys, elbows, 2 racks, a starter 2 days ago, whole front end. it just goes on and on. lol

the main problems i have seen, are valve cover, intake gaskets leaking, suspension, mainly outer tie rods, sway bar links, control arm bushings, hubs. non major is the window motors go out fairly often, ignition switch, random little things that make people want to get rid of them, but if your semi-knowledgable with tools, you can fix it for really cheap as the problems arise. my two front hubs, and passenger tie rod and control arm bushings were worn, so i ended up doing both outer tie rods, both hubs, sway bar links, control arms, and brake pads on the front of my car today..in all, it costed me less than 300$. A shop would charge over 800-1000$ i would assume. It took a LONG time, considering one of the bolts to the hub was so rusted it got stripped and had to be torched off, and one of the tie rods got stripped putting it on, getting a different tie rod for like 15$ tomorrow and then a alignment, and im in less than 380$.

I would agree with scotty with some of the engine work, power steering pumps go out alot, starters, batteries, water pumps on occasion, thermostats, and the MAJOR one, is the coolant elbows. Its all fairly simple to do yourself, remove bolts to coolant tank and you have alot of room to work with.

less than $300 ? maybe if you're buying the cheapest they got . i'm a bit apprehensive of installing bargain parts on things that effect controlling the car . i read the reviews on the parts and stay away from the less than 4 star parts...lol... i'd rather pay $40 more for the moog hubs than have to replace the driveworks hub (advanced auto) a year later.
i think i'll be replacing at least the sway bar and outer tie rod ends before i get it through inspection. my abs light is on so maybe a hub or 2 as well.

I have a 99 GTP(daily driver) and for about 6 months now and I have replace the fuel pump/ fuel sender (fuel sender was bad), spark plugs (autolite 606), spark plug wires(autolite for now),ignition coils(thought I had a bad coil), supercharger coupler(ZZP), drivers side rear window motor, and fluid change (royal purple).

I wouldn't go to autozone all their parts are cheap crap. Order it online Napa get coupon codes and things get cheap

i got duralast parts all over my car, they work just fine. the tie rods ends i got are like 5 years old and are still tight. the water pump is still fine, as well as the p/s pump, that ill add is dead silent.

hubs, dont buy the store brand. stick with the name brands for those. skf, moog,or timken. those are in no order of whats good or better. just the better brands and the better 3 year warranties they carry.

i don't go to auto zone , i go to advance auto's. they don't make moog parts and i've yet to have to replace a moog part twice. advanced bargain parts are the driveworks brand. i stay away from them when it comes to parts that can put you in a ditch if they fail. stuff thats easy to replace like hoses or blower motors , i'll go for the cheap crap and hope for the best.
timkins prices are ridiculous. acdelco even more
front hub assembly - moog -$134 .....timkin - $278....ACDelco - $328

what about FEQ brand ? never bought their stuff before . priced about the same as moog.

where are you shopping? timkins are no more then 130 here, moog the same, at the parts store with no discounts.

and a delco hub you will cost more for sure, but 300 is outta whack too.

if your shopping at advance auto buy everything on line and find a discount code for more off then the listed monthly code, then pick up local 30 minutes later, your order is on the counter waiting for you.
