Colapsed Lifter?

Ive had a small ticking noise in my engine since i bought the car which ive wrote off as a vavle lash but if had a couple people tell me it sounded like a colapsed lifter. I really dont know too much about v6 valve trains im used to my overhead cam hondas. So really have no idea wat a collapsed lifter is or how to fix it or if this is even my problem. At idle it ticks fairly loud but only once the motor is warmed up it does not tick at all if the motors cold. Wen u rev the motor the souds geos away around 1000-1500 then at about 2500-3000 it comes back but it sounds like a sewing machien then once you pass 3200-3500 it goes away again then wen you let it down to idle it comes back. The warmer the motor is the worse it gets. LOL my dad told me to used a bottle of transmission fluid or some thicker oil and itll go away. But i thought maybe someone here mite have some helping knowlage of my problem.

Oh 98 gp gt 3800

you have to take the top end of the motor off to get at the lifters, but i really havent heard of a lot of lifter problems. i am running stock 130k lifters and they are still awesome.

sure its not a loose rocker or something of the like?

Could be your lifters...your dad is right. Get some thick oil and run and see if it goes away. Or take it apart and get to them and believe me if its hitting you will beable to see the damage.

take the top end off as in head and upper and lower intake? How do you check to see if a lifter is bad. How much damage and to to wat? THis is gunna be a pain in the aS it coming from the rear head. I love this car but i hate it.

alrtie well how do i check the rockers. I know remove the valve cover and use a set of tappet gauges but wat the process and the specs.

The lifters should all have some pre load on them. You shouldn't have any rocker arms that are "loose", that is with up & down play. You'll need new bolts or get some reusable rocker arm bolts. Clean the bolt holes with some carb cleaner then some canned compressed air like you use on your keyboard, to ensure they will tighten down all the way. Torque the bolts to 18 ft/lbs and then an additional 1/4 turn. The tightening requirements are different for reusable bolts not sure on the specs for them.

Thank you im look at the rear head and thers a whole buncha stuff in the way anyone ever taken that cover off how much of that stuff needs to be taken off

its been a small tick for a while but has gotten really bad lately i know i should hav proly checked it a while ago but its my gfs car and we just got back together wat kinda damage could having a loose rocker do and how do i check for it.
Thanks guy the info youve gotten me has been awsome and very helpful

if any of the rockers are loose that is bad. they will feel tight when you try to move them around.

otherwise just keep diving in. it is possible that a lifter is done for.

Well if it is just a little loose not really much. but if really loose. possibly the engine was over revved and bent a push rod thus possibly causing a bent valve also.
:th_scratchhead:
maybe before you do a tear down do a compression check first.

alrite im going to check them today. SO if one of the rockers is loose get a new rockerarm bolt and retorque the rocker arm. Y cant you use the original rocker arm bolts. Really i just need this motor to make it through in one piece till i get my taxes back. Since the push rods are rite ther when i remove the rocker arms can i pull it out and check it and put it back in without messing anything up.

yep, check for any bend pushrods while youre taking the rockers off. it would also be a good time to get some ARP reusable rocker bolts since they are well worth the money and you can use them more than once unlike the TTY stock bolts.

if youre still having problems after that then youre going to need to get down to the lifters to see if any of those are messed up.

alrite guys quick update checked rocker arms and had one fairly loose checked the pushrod slightly bentnot bad has a slight warp. Question, i need this back together for tomorrow it my only car can i put a a new pushrod in or do i need to change the lifter also (this i cant do tonite). My big question is which would be better to tighten the rocker arm back down using the slightly bent pushrod or buying a new push rod and droping that in till i can tear the lower intake off? THe reason i ask is i thought i remember reading that replacing a push rod and using the same lifter can cause damage to ur cam.
