cleaning engine??

over thanks giving break im going to be replacing a bunch of seals on my car and I was wondering what i could use to clean the engine compartment. any ideas would be much appreciated
 


Well I've heard that you can spray all purpose cleaner on the engine and then hose it off, I haven't tryed it because I'm a little scare to do it.
 
ive heard of tire foam and then spraying it off too but i dont want to mess anything up especially since ill be doing that right after i fix it and id like it to stay fixed for awhile after that.
 
you cover up some stuff, battery, alternator, air box. maybe coils. hose it down, spray some degreaser all over it, scrub a little. and hose it off good
 
I would spray some purple power on some stuff and clean it off with the power washer. As long as you're not blasting the battery or the fuse box, you should be pretty good. A little water doesn't hurt usually, especially consider when doing an automatic car-wash they usually spray up from the ground as you enter and hit a lot of that stuff anyway. Just don't directly spray it down and you'll be good.
 
so cover up battery, fuse box, alternator, and intake... dont worry about wires?... and hose it off or high-ish pressure wash?
 


Just a small warning about simple green I love the stuff but it doesnt like all metals and will leave some metal looking oxidised
 


certain metals Honestly once i found this out i stopped using it as an all over cleaner so i cant tell you im guessing cast aluminum cause its poruos to begin with but not sure
 
i went to car wash and sprayed engine with the tire cleaner and then rinsed it off on the gentle cycle, looks good didnt cover anything, i do have supercharger cover off. just dont hold over alt and wires for very long. its a 98 gtp.
 
I do it the hard way then, 409 and paper towels are fine with me. Takes a little longer but I'm pretty OCD with my car sometimes. A good way to keep some of the plastics looking clean is to wipe them down with WD-40, makes them look new for a while.
 
my normal way is to spray it down (find Castrol Super Clean, THE BEST!!!) with degreaser and let it set, soft brush and tooth brush for everything else, just watch the hose on your electronics, other then that you'll be fine. On my S-10 i spray the entire engine and alt and everything with Super Clean and use a hose on it once a month, and in 70k miles i've never had a single issue, just my 2 cents
 


The last time i actually fully detailed an engine bay was my friends mustang a magicball mini tooth brush some pipe cleaners a bottle brush simplegreen blackmagic and a round 4 hours time
made me 100 bucks though so no real complaints It get insane when you do it right

Just did this. I just opened the hood and sprayed everything using our gas powered pressure washer we have at the shop. I didn't cover anything. I cleaned off the battery and coils, too. The only thing I didn't do was blow it into the alternator and I went quickly over the coils. I started it up right afterward to let it warm up and that's all.

Just do it on a cool engine:cool:
