Clean carbon from piston head

I could care less about what the TSB say, GM says not to do a million different things on their cars yet techs/mechanics do whatever they please The little finger discs are far safer than the roloc pads, those just spray little fibers everywhere.

GM says to use their J tool to do jobs, GM says I shouldn't impact/air rachet on every bolt but I do it anyway because I want to.

Not trying to argue and continue this thread further but some things shouldn't be done and others just do not matter enough to cause harm.

I agree, however I use the discs and have never had a problem. Hell, I spray brake clean right on the piston. I'm careful though.
 
surely experience plays a big part. but how many forum members have only seen someone go to town on a rusty rotor with a roloc and then gets the idea that its ok to use rolocs on their engine.

ive pulled apart and junked tons of engines over the years. ive seen some pretty rough cylinder bores. anything you miss is gonna take a little bit more out of your cylinder sealing.

my point is that a razor doesnt require air and a pack of 100 is 10$, enough to regasket a whole damn motor. with a razor you can push the crap away from sensitive area's (oil passages, crevices, etc), and even shovel it away and wipe it in a rag.

splurge on a nice blade holder and you'll have 15$ into the ability to clean and prep all gasket surfaces with very little chance of contamination.

the world is damned full of 1d10t's. and id hand em a rag soaked with gasoline and a pack of razor blades well before i told em to use a roloc or any rotary device to clean the motor.

have you read the studies on the effects of those discs on the RA? those ****ers will remove aluminum quite fast and the primary issue being that small deposites always cleanup with a ground in trough around em.

plain and simple OEM's and almost everybody doesnt want em used. hell some dont want you to use razor blades, but blades are cheap to toss when a nick occurs.

im sorry gentlemen...but ive seen so much god damn carnage over the years that id rather an idiot have an empty revolver vs one with a round or two in there...

**** half the lim gasket jobs i pull apart are seeping out all those nice little grooves someone ground in there....yay

And I could make the same commentary about the same idiot pushing toward the oil passages with a razor, not handling the blade properly and gouging the hell out of a manifold ....where it'll leak from.

James, I'm totally with you. Someone without a clue shouldn't going at the job w/o learning how to do the job properly. I won't condemn a roloc though, I'll condemn the idiot that is over zealous or doesn't understand how to properly use a tool. And the tool could be a razor, roloc, finger roloc or even a hammer. Hence why every flat blade screwdriver package says "don't effing use this as a prybar". We know what most people use it for.... a prybar.

Along the same lines.. most of the population doesn't realize a pen/pencil is as dangerous as a loaded gun.
