chip or no chip?

I was wondering if my key has a chip in it or not. Its a 2000 grand prix gt. when i bought it the guy gave me a spare key that is just the key, no rubber piece or chip. When i try to start my car with it the car will start, but then it turns right off. So im pretty sure it needs a chip, but i read somewhere that they only put chips in 01+, so im not sure.

If the spare key has the car turn off right away then u need a chip. Look on ur regular key and u should see something like
PK3
M
Or something like that. If u do u have a chip

The extra key you have is prolly just the valet key. Allows you to unlock doors, glovebox, trunk, trunk pass-through....but not start the car. Your working key should be marked with the passkey 3 (PK3M)

Uhh.. Valet keys you can start the car but can't unlock/lock glovebox, trunk pass thru, and the trunk lid itself.

Probably a "flat" key.. So you can unlock the doors only. Ie if you lock the keys in the car

PK3 are 2000+ So yes you have a need for a chip. It probably needs programed. Take it to your dealer and they can do this per your vin in the parts dept.

You don't need to go to the dealer to program the key itself. Its as simple as starting with the main key, removing main key, putting in new key and starting it.
