Check Tire Pressure light on with no low pressure.

I was driving back from a visit to the parent's house yesterday, and about 10 miles to go, I get my "check tire pres." light. I pull over, check them, 35-36 all the way around. No hissing sound or anything like that. I get back in the car, start it, and the light is off again. Any idea what else may cause the light to come one like this?

My car does this from time to time. Not sure what year your car is, but on my 97 the system doesn't really read the air pressure. It reads the differences in wheel speed. So I notice that the light will go off if I am driving slow and hit a bump/pothole. Or it could be a wheel speed sensor starting to go bad. And sometimes it goes off for no noticable reason.

But when it does, I just reach under the dash and hit the reset button. If I really have a tire going flat, I just figure the light will come back on shortly.

Well, good to hear that I'm not the only one having that problem. It hasn't come back on since, so I suppose it was just a random occurrence. And, yes, mine is a 97, too.

I think you don't hear about this problem as often because it happens more to the 97 guys. The 97 GTPs had a different ABS system than the 98-03s got. And this must be an issue that was corrected with the newer system. But the ABS system in the 97s is the same reason that the 97 GTPs don't have traction control. It was a weak system all around.

I have a 97 GTP as well.... I was stuck on the same issue...

I disconnected my front two wheel speed sensors, cleaned them up a little, and re-connected them.... lights went off and stayed off.

also - I like that my 97 doesn't have traction control :th_thumbsup-wink:

It's been a few weeks now, and I still have it come on and turn itself off when I shut the car down. Bumps in the road do seem to set it off quite frequently.

But when it does, I just reach under the dash and hit the reset button. If I really have a tire going flat, I just figure the light will come back on shortly.

I've tried that, but it won't reset the system. Would having the ABS fuse pulled not allow it to reset the tire pressure light?

I had the fuse pulled because the self test thing was frustrating me. I put it back in, checked all of the resistances for the sensors, and went about my day today with no light. I'm assuming that having the fuse pulled had something to do with the tire pressure light coming on. Actually, the self test hasn't been making as much noise as it used to, so maybe I re-secured one of the wires while checking the sensors, as well!!

GTP has a check tire pressure light?!?!?! No way! Where is it?..(by the rpm gauge?) <--- Noob here

It took me 2 weeks to find out I had a cig lighter in the car. I was amazed.

Mine's in the DIC on the right side.

Correction to my earlier statement that I believe I fixed the light issue: It came on twice today while I was driving around. Along with the Check Tire Pres. light came the ABS light, so I'm guessing I have a wheel speed sensor going out or shorting itself out on the chassis somewhere. Anyone have an ABS scanner they're willing to loan me?? :D :D

Yes, sounds like you have a WSS going bad and need to replace the hub. That would be my guess. Could be a bad wire in the connector harness. But like you mentioned, you need to get a scanner to narrow it down to a particular wheel.

Will any computer-based scanner work, or do I need an ABS specific scanner to catch the code?

You need a scanner that specifically does ABS codes. I have a scanner for OBD-II codes, but it will not do ABS codes. I also have a PowrTuner PCM tunning package that can scan and delete codes, and this also does not scan or delete ABS codes.

I was lucky enough to borrow a Snap-On scanner that could do the ABS codes when my ABS light was giving me trouble. Most garages have something similar to this.

I never knew my gtp hade one of these light either...i have had a donut on my car and it saying im going almost a hundred but really im only going like 86 (because of the difference in wheel sizes) and i have had a very low and flat tire on the car still with no light.
