Charging System Failure Help??

My 2005 was doing the same thing when switching from high to low beams and back. I changed my battery(it was 6 years old) and the problem has not occured since then. That has been about 3 weeks ago. I was thinking mabey my HID's or led lights were causing some problem but luckily the problem resolved with the new battery. good luck

I have gotten this light very briefly twice now.Man these cars are really funny. I have all kinds of weird stuff that happens sometimes. I guess they are small flaws in the design of the car overall. I have had stuff happen and had it checked by the shop no codes but the problem existed. It takes alot of patientce and time to maintain a grand prix.

Another note on this problem -- it is also very commonly caused by improper battery terminal connections. Clean your terminals and check/tighten the connections regularly; I would suggest every 4-6 months, especially in the cold seasons.

04 and 05 have the alternator with the built-in clutch and they tend to fail.

Also, it's time for all '05's to get new batteries.

Re: charging system failure.

Awesome advice and thank you. The battery is no more than 2 years old so i think im covered except it is an optima red top so would that cause any problems? Also the terminals were cleaned and tightened and corrosion inhibitor was added about 3 months ago so i will double check, you cant always trust the dealership. But as of now i havent had a repeat of the light and have no problems. i have a diagnostic program on my comp. and i ran it while i drove and nothing out of the ordinary. idk i still love my baby.

I've had the same problem the Charging System Failure came on I just want to know if I should check anything before I R&R the alternator. I tested it and came back good at local parts store, low 14v high 14.56v but when its on the car and I touch the back post and bat terminal with a multimeter I only get 6v. I just want to cover my bases before handing over $200. I'm new to Grand Prix just bought this one from a friend he had it and i always liked it. It's a 2004 GT2.
PS: batt is good
