Changing Headunit

I was trying to put my Pioneer avh-p5200dvd in a ran into a bit of a speed bump. I made all my connections to the wiring harness, I even added in the emergency brake bypass. When i connected it to the stock harness and got nothing so I got out my test light. I checked the constant wire to make sure it was in the right place and as soon as it lit up, it went off. After that, the pioneer still wouldnt come on but now the stock radio wont come on anymore either. It lights up as well as the HUD and HVAC but none show anything on the displays and are unresponsive to button commands. Does anyone have any insight as to why Im having such a hard time.
 


I didnt get a chance to check them before it got dark so I'll look at em in the morning. I do know they were good before I put the test light on my constant wire. After that is when the factory radio, hud, and hvac controls starting acting funny. To be sure when I check in the morning, they dont share a fuse do they?
 
Thanks, Ill check the fuses as soon as the sun comes up lol. Once I get that done and they are indeed still good, where would be my next place to look. Also, is there a way to hardwire it straight to the battery as opposed to through the harness?
 


Im sorry, I didnt mean the battery but another 12v source that turns on when the car turns on. By it being late and me being partially frustrated I tyoed the wrong thing. Id hate not being able to figure it out myself, paying someone to install it and it being something simple.

best buy has great service for decent pricing, they could probably take a look it would be cheap if they just had to do a couple wires
**** my new HU was installed for free there, because sony had a deal with them or something.
depending on how you are set up best buy goes cheaper the more your system is close to being finished hooking up

I know the sleepy feeling all too well. Yea its pretty much done. Ive got the harness all wired up. The mounting bracket is on as well, I just need to figure out why it isnt getting power. Now that you mention Best Buy, my gf works there so I can use her discount. Id rather pay to know its right than to be frustrated any further.
 
I solved the problem of my factory unit and other controls not powering on. It was the fuse under the hood that was bad. After i replaced that I shot across the parking lot to Best Buy and let them install it. Cant beat $100 for piece of mind.
 


It blows my mind to think they can charge 100 bucks to install a head unit. I'd charge someone 20 bucks and a steak to do theirs. I've heard nothing but complaints about best buy's installation. My experience in friend's cars backs this up.
 
I agree with Vette, its a matter of splicing like 8 wires and you can do it outside the car and just plug it into the factory harness. 100 bucks? I bought my dammm HU for my old car on ebay for that much, I strongly dislike bestbuy, especially when it comes to something like that. They F'd up my girlfriends install and now her rear defroster wont work.

I'd do car audio for a living but i have no rep and I can't use fiberglass for ****.

I'm going to be doing custom doorskins this summer so hopefully I figure it out...

But honestly, its not worth getting into because most people just want ****ty **** aka, sound that just gets loud. Its easy to do, but you would hardly make any money from the install.
 
I cant say i agree with your two, when i went to best buy the guy was really knowledgeable and he showed us the cheapest deal. My HU was installed for free and he replaced two fuses for free.
Unless he is the reason for two of my speakers being blown, im all good with Best Buy
 


I know how to install pretty much everything as far as audio/video goes in the car but my factory harness wasnt right. My bro in law who had the car before me had the harness all hacked up and wired odd cus he had sounds with the factory radio. I didnt have the time to put into doing it so best buy was the best bet.

do you know your stuff?

I'm just saying, typically people who know their stuff knows more than their local best buy employee. Granted, their computer people do know their stuff, i was friends with one of them. As far as them installing it free, that probably means you bought it from them. If you bought it from them, you paid anywhere from 100-500 dollars too much. That's why they did it for free, they make up profits elsewhere. I stand by what I said earlier, I'd never take stuff to best buy. My one exception was i sent a friend to them because in order to install his speakers we had to remove panels covering airbags and i didn't want to risk it. better to have the "professionals" with insurance do it.

Also, my work was better. They probably just wire nut or twist and tape everything together. Mine was soldered :)

I got it for 170 and the price on the HU i got is 140 to 170, saved 50-70 bucks on the install
